BRENTFORD must be sick of the sight of Burnley this season.

The Clarets have taken six points from the West Londoners, and having snaffled their star striker in August they signed another one of their main men on deadline day.

On the first day of the Championship season James Tarkowski and Andre Gray were the Brentford heroes in an unlikely comeback against Ipswich.

Two-nil down two minutes into injury time, both got on the scoresheet to salvage a point for the Bees.

That day seems a long time ago now, with Gray and Tarkowski reunited at Gawthorpe this week in the colours of the Clarets, and hoping to team up to devastating affect once more.

Tarkowski will have to go some to match the impact Gray has had at Turf Moor, with the striker the top scorer in the Championship with 18 goals.

The 23-year-old centre half, who finally signed for the Clarets for £3million plus add-ons after a month-long transfer saga, admits he has been surprised at how quickly his former Griffin Park teammate has adapted to life in East Lancashire.

“He did very well last year to score the amount of goals he did, but he’s already beaten that total this season, so that shows how much he has come on this season,” said Tarkowski.

“He’s a lot more clinical than he was last year. I think playing in a two has probably helped him, he’s got less work to do and he’s linking up with Vokesy which is helping him quite a bit.”

Gray had never played higher than League Two before signing for Brentford last season, but he has taken to the second tier like a duck to water, scoring 35 goals since moving to Griffin Park in June 2014.

“He improved throughout last season,” said former Oldham defender Tarkowski.

“From start to finish the difference was unbelievable. You can see from the start of this season he’s probably improved again so I just hope he keeps scoring the goals he has been.

“He has his days in training, he can be hit and miss but as long as you do it on a Saturday it doesn’t matter to be honest. He may have changed, but if you do it on a Saturday I don’t think anyone will care how you train.”

Gray’s initial chance in the Football League ended when he was released by Shrewsbury and he dropped down to non-league with Hinckley and Luton, and Tarkowski believes that journey back has strengthened his resolve to make the most of his career.

“You see that in a lot of players who drop down,” he said. “They have it all at one point and then they lose it, so they have to fight to get back what they once had.

“He’s one who has done really well and I’m sure he’ll want to kick on and go even further than he has done.”

So what of Tarkowski, who has over 140 Football League appearances to his name despite only turning 23 in November?

A fine addition to the Turf Moor ranks, according to Gray.

“He’s a big physical presence, he’s technically outstanding and he’s got knowhow in this league,” said the Clarets top scorer.

“He was outstanding for Brentford last season and he has been again this season, that’s why Burnley have come in for him.”
