BURNLEY have missed out on the signing of Spurs star Alex Pritchard with the midfielder joining Premier League side West Brom.

Burnley were hopeful of landing the 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Brentford, where he was team-mates with Clarets top scorer Andre Gray.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that Pritchard had initially favoured a move to Turf Moor, despite interest from Championship rivals Middlesbrough, but the chance to play Premier League football proved to be the clincher.

Pritchard was linked with a move to Burnley earlier this month after recovering from a long-term ankle injury, but it was believed that Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s preference was to keep the attacking midfield man at White Hart Lane.

Pritchard had been earmarked for a first team role this season until he required surgery on his ankle in October and was subsequently ruled out for a further three months.

However, there has been a change of heart by Spurs in the interests of Pritchard getting regular first team football - after impressing with the Bees last term and scoring 12 goals in 45 appearances in their play-off campaign - and they have given the green light to a loan deal until the end of the season.
