FA CUP ties against lower-league opposition are more a mental thing than anything else. You’ve got to approach them in the right frame of mind.

And that means starting well. For the first 20 minutes to half an hour it’s important you don’t let your opponents get on top of you.

If Blackburn Rovers do that tomorrow, and get a grip of the game, then they should come through quite comfortably.

But if they go there thinking, ‘right, it’s only Newport County, we don’t have to try hard,’ then they will have problems.

Blackburn have got to treat the game the same as they did when they went to Anfield to face Liverpool in the quarter-finals last season.

There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that Newport will be up it. Lower-league clubs always are. You only have to look at Blackburn’s recent record in the League Cup for proof of that.

So, yes, this is a potential banana skin.

But it’s also a chance for Blackburn to put their season back on track after three poor defeats.

That’s why, if I was Paul Lambert, I’d go there as strong as I can.

Get the win, get some goals, and get some confidence back before QPR in the league on Tuesday.

Blackburn have got to stop the downward spiral and tomorrow gives them the perfect opportunity to do that.

That said I still expect Paul to make more signings. He’s had a look at everyone now and knows what he needs.

It’s good that he’s started his business early but it’s clear by the fact that his side haven’t scored in four games that he needs another striker.

Jordan Rhodes is having a lean spell, but all forwards do. That’s why he needs support.

Danny Graham would be a good signing. He’s not had the best of time at Sunderland but he previously did well at Swansea and he’s proven as a good Championship player.

Whenever he’s played in the division, he’s done well and scored goals.

That’s what Blackburn need at the moment. Here’s hoping some come tomorrow.
