BLACKBURN Rovers on-loan forward Tom Lawrence was praised by his Wales manager Chris Coleman and captain Ashley Williams after his impressive display in the friendly defeat to Holland.

Lawrence played the full game in the 3-2 loss to Holland at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday and won plenty of plaudits for his display, while Rovers full-back Adam Henley came on in the final quarter to win his first international cap.

“I was delighted for Tom Lawrence,” said Coleman.

“He is a very good player, he has improved and done very well for us.”

Williams backed his manager’s assessment.

He said: “We learned a lot about some of our guys and I thought we performed very well against a very good team.

“I was impressed by a lot of the players, especially Tom.”

Coleman has now set his sights on playing England in a pre-Euro 2016 friendly – even if he hopes they are not paired with them in next month’s draw.

Wales could meet England in France next summer as Coleman’s side will be among the bottom seeds in the Paris draw on December 12 and the Three Lions are in the top pot.

“We know we will be drawn against one of the top teams and England are one of the top teams,” Coleman said.

“It is our first major tournament for a while and we could maybe play England in a friendly somewhere down the line.

“We would absolutely love to do that.

“That would not be a problem at all. But in the tournament itself it would be viewed as a battle of Britain and there would be a lot of things that go with it that could make it a distraction.”

Wales’ next friendly will be in March and the ramifications of the Euro 2016 draw will be considered before a list of suitable opponents is drawn up.

By that time Coleman’s contract situation should be a lot clearer.

The 45-year-old former Rovers defender is contracted until the end of the European Championship and he has already spoken about his ambition to lead Wales in the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

But he said: “I have not spoken to anyone regarding my contract.

“If everything is right, of course I want to stay on.”
