BLACKBURN Rovers managing director Derek Shaw has confirmed that a player sale of just ‘under £5m’ would see the club emerge from its Financial Fair Play embargo.

After the closure of the summer transfer window, in which Rovers raked in around £10.5m in fees for Rudy Gestede, Tom Cairney and Josh King, Shaw said the club needed another ‘biggish’ departure.

And, speaking at Tuesday’s fans’ question and answer session at Ewood Park, he put a figure on how much it would take for the club to have its embargo lifted.

Shaw said: “We are probably one sale away, one asset sale away, from coming out of FFP, which would probably be a player under £5m.

“If we came out of it in January we’d obviously have to watch ourselves that we don’t go straight back into it.

“That’s the situation we’re in at this moment in time as every time we loan a player and spend money it all goes against the balance of your books.

“But at this moment in time we’re probably one player sale away, which is under £5m.”

Rovers were hit with the embargo in January after posting losses of £42.1m for the 2013-14 campaign.

The club must submit its accounts for last season to the Football League by December 1. They are expected to show improved losses of under £20m.

The maximum loss allowed for the 2014-15 campaign under FFP rules is £6m subject to the deduction of certain costs including any expenditure on infrastructure, youth development and any exceptional items as agreed by the Fair Play panel.

Rovers have regular dialogue with the Football League over ways in which they could have the embargo lifted.

But the sure fire way to have it taken away is through further player sales.

Rovers boss Gary Bowyer, however, is looking to add to his ranks.

He has two spaces in his squad to make free transfers or loan signings, who can be paid no more than £10,000 per week, under FFP rules.

And, with Jason Lowe, Chris Brown and Fode Koita sidelined, and other players nursing knocks, he admits he would like a new recruit.

“I won’t deny we could certainly do with a body or two to give us a boost and help out,” said Bowyer, who thought he had a sealed a deal for a Championship winger on loan last month.

“The injury list is not a big one but it just goes to show with the restrictions we’re under a couple of injuries and we are being stretched.”

After FFP rules were changed in November the maximum loss permitted for this season – 2015-16 – is £13m.
