DANNY Guthrie has urged Blackburn Rovers to use their first success of the season as a springboard for a charge up the Championship table.

Rovers hauled themselves out of the bottom three on Saturday after they recorded their maiden win of the campaign by sweeping aside Charlton Athletic 3-0 at Ewood Park.

The manner of the victory did not surprise Guthrie given the performances Gary Bowyer’s side produced in their previous matches at QPR and Fulham.

But having ended their eight-game winless run the midfielder insists the Rovers dressing room is now united in a desire to ‘kick on’ – starting with Saturday’s trip to high-flying Hull City.

Guthrie said: “The message in the dressing room after Saturday was that we’ve got to kick on now.

“We’ve got that first win out of the way, it’s no longer hanging over our heads, and now we can look forward to a good game next Saturday.

“It’ll be a really good test for us but it’s one that we will go into with a lot of confidence after the way we’ve played in these last three games.

“Second half at Fulham we dominated and should have taken something, we dominated for large parts of the game at QPR and should have got three points instead of one, and then obviously we got the win on Saturday.

“Despite the run we’ve been on we’re not a team lacking in any confidence. We just needed to take our moments – and on Saturday’s that’s what we did.

“We’ve never let our heads drop and that comes down from the mentality. We’ve got a really good dressing room, a really good staff, we’ve got a really good work ethic, and we can create chances, so we knew the win would come sooner or later.”

Guthrie, though, admits it was ‘long overdue’.

He added: “We’ve felt we’ve deserved more and, while I know a lot of teams say that, we really have.

“It’s never been a case that we’ve never been in a game. Every game we’ve been in, it’s been close, but we knew the longer it goes on the harder it becomes.

“But we’re not a team that shirks away. We went into Saturday’s game confident and we competed with them and ran all over them to be fair.

“They were nowhere near us and it was about us taking our chances – and once we got that vital first goal we knew the second half we had to come out right and see out the game.”

Goalscorers Jordan Rhodes and Tom Lawrence grabbed the headlines after they fired Rovers to victory over Charlton.

But for the second match running Guthrie impressed with a diligent display in the centre of the park.

Having left Reading in May the 28-year-old spent most of pre-season training alone before he signed for Rovers just three days before the 2015-16 campaign kicked off.

But he believes supporters are now beginning to see the best of him after using the most recent international break to get up to speed.

“It was important for me to get to the break and get some good work in,” said Guthrie.

“I was able to do bits and pieces to catch up with that I missed.

“I’m feeling really good and getting through the last three tough games has done me the world of good.”
