BLACKBURN Rovers Premiership title winner Tony Gale says he is not concerned by the current Ewood Park crop’s start to the season.

And he believes a point from Sunday’s showdown at another of his former clubs, Fulham, would represent a good result for Rovers.

Gary Bowyer’s side head to Craven Cottage for the Sky Sports-live clash having failed to win any of their opening five Championship matches.

Fulham have also been slow out of the blocks although they did record their maiden league victory before the international break.

But Gale insists that both of his old clubs can and will improve once their new-look squads settle.

“They do need to pick it up a little bit as they’ve had so-so starts,” said the Sky Sports pundit, who made 15 appearances in Rovers’ top-flight triumph 20 years ago.

“But I don’t think it’s anything to worry about for either team because in this league you can turn it around quickly.

“You can turn six games without a win into six games without a defeat. That’s the manner of this league – anybody can beat anybody because it’s that close.

“And I think this season it’s going to be closer than ever. I don’t think there are going to be two sides that will run away with it.

“But of course you want to get that first win as soon as possible and I would not put it past Rovers getting it at Fulham on Sunday. If Jordan Rhodes gets a couple of chances, I’m sure he’ll put one away, so you never know.

“But with Fulham being at home, I think it could be a bit of a tall order for Rovers to win, so I think a point for Gary would be good.”

Bowyer is on his longest run without a victory since taking over Rovers on a full-time basis and last month he was the subject of reports, which were swiftly denied by the club, that he had been sacked.

“I was talking with (former Rovers goalkeeper) Paul Robinson at Sky recently and he said Gary was coming under a bit of undue pressure, and I couldn’t understand that,” said Fulham legend Gale.

“I know results have been so-so but he was the guy who brought it all together after all the stuff that happened after the new owners came in.

“Hopefully he’ll get a little bit of a run at it because he’s probably managed in one of the most difficult times that anyone has managed in at Blackburn Rovers.”

In the summer Bowyer lost Tom Cairney to Fulham and Rudy Gestede to Aston Villa, who are managed by Rovers’ 1994-95 Premiership-winning captain Tim Sherwood.

But Bowyer managed to keep Rhodes after Middlesbrough had a £12m bid blocked.

And Gale, who was back at Ewood in May for the Celebrations of Champions event, said: “It was important Rovers kept hold of one of their marquee strikers.

“It was a shame that Gestede had to go but I wasn’t surprised he went to Villa as I caught up with Tim at the reunion in May and he said then that he was after Gestede.

“I’m surprised that more clubs haven’t come in for Jordan – maybe they have and they’ve not met the valuation Rovers have got on him.

“No doubt there’ll be teams looking at him again, as he scores goals, but Rovers are within their rights to hold out for what they think is the right price.”

A fee in excess of £3m was enough for Rovers owners Venky’s to sell Cairney to Fulham.

And Gale said: “It must hurt Rovers fans to see Tom to go to a rival – and a rival that is more or less on the same par as them.”
