ON going back to his former club Burnley manager Sean Dyche was presented with a souvenir of the 1997 FA Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough in which he scored a penalty.

There was warm applause from the Chesterfield fans for their returning hero. But they did not stand on ceremony for long.

When Lukas Jutkiewicz and George Boyd had scored eight minutes apart by the midway point of the first half it looked like being a comfortable afternoon for the Clarets, just two weeks from the start of a new Championship season.

Even when Jake Orrell pulled a goal back soon after there was not a hint of the second half to come.

Burnley had popped the ball around effortlessly and effectively and carved out openings that could have led to more than their two goals.

But a striker shortage took its toll in a tough second half that was punctuated by Spireites substitutes, and after Armand Gnanduillet scored a spectacular equaliser their fresh legs fashioned a late win.

“First half, overall I thought we controlled it, and the game should have been out of sight with the chances we had, but credit to Chesterfield, they went hard all game and made loads of subs, and had that freshness at the end,” said Dyche, who made just two changes.

“We were very good first half an hour particularly, they got a little bit of the ball in the last 15 minutes, but we conceded a really poor goal.”

As he had in the 1-0 win over Rangers last Tuesday, Jutkiewicz led the line again, with Boyd playing off him to begin with, then Kightly in the second half.

Controlling Matt Lowton’s diagonal ball into the box, Jutkiewicz almost scored on the volley, but his impressive left foot effort crashed off the underside of the bar and bounced out.

He was on target just two minutes later though, with Lowton again the provider at the end of a patient passing move that had started in midfield, and this time Jutkiewicz stealing in at the near post to convert from close range.

Boyd looked certain to score after Kightly’s initial shot was blocked, but the follow-up was blocked on the line by right back Tendayi Darikwa.

But, like Jutkiewicz, Boyd was among the goals quickly, getting on the end of Fredrik Ulvestad’s defence-splitting pass and rounding the keeper to slot into an empty net.

Neither fit-again goalkeeper Tom Heaton, Michael Keane, in his first pre-season start, or Michael Duff, who wore the captain’s armband, had really been put to the test, so they would have been disappointed to concede against the run of play when Orrell converted from close range from Darikwa’s pull back into a packed penalty area.

Chesterfield looked as if they might struggle to build on any momentum when they began to drip-feed substitutions from the fifth minute of the second half.

But their fresh legs were able to capitalise on Burnley’s fatigue.

Gnanduillet had an almost instant impact.

The Frenchman did little of note last season and was loaned out to Tranmere and Oxford.

He set his stall out for this season with a stunning overhead kick from the edge of the box that went in off the far right post to level matters.

Burnley had chances to restore their lead but Jutkiewicz showed too much of the ball to goalkeeper Tommy Lee, who then denied Lowton from a tight angle.

Chesterfield, who last season finished in the League One play-offs under former Burnley midfielder Paul Cook, finished strongly.

Gnanduillet was able to force his way into the box past Lowton before laying off to substitute Mani Dieseruvwe, who failed to hit the target.

But Byron Harrison grabbed a last minute winner for Dean Saunders’ side after Gnanduillet again ran at the defence to set up the chance.
