PADIHAM’S Rebecca Rimmington put in an impressive performance at the National Road Cycling Championships last week.

The talented IKON Mazda star finished a creditable 31st in the women’s road race in Lincolnshire on Sunday in a field that included star names such as Lizzie Armitstead, Laura Trott and Dani King.

The Padiham star ended up finishing one place behind Paralympic legend Dame Sarah Storey, whose illustrious career has seen her win six Paralympic cycling gold medals.

Rimmington also impressed in Thursday’s time trial by finishing 11th.

Barnoldswick’s Amy Gornall also competed, finishing 48th in the overall standings and 19th in the under-23 standings.

She also competed in the time trial and finished 24th in the race won by Team Velosport’s Hayley Simmonds, who beat Molly Weaver and Storey into second and third place respectively.

Olympic silver medallist Armitstead shook off injuries sustained in a heavy crash at last week’s Tour of Britain to win the road race, with defending champion and fellow Olympian Trott coming home third.

Steven Burke, a quarter of Team GB’s gold-medal winning pursuit team from London 2012, was on the entry list for the time trial but missed out as Alex Dowsett took the title.

Dowsett set a world record for the longest distance cycled in an hour in May with an effort of 52.937km, before Sir Bradley Wiggins broke that record earlier this month.

Geraint Thomas, named in Team Sky’s line-up for the upcoming Tour de France was also missing.
