BURNLEY are facing a defensive double-whammy, with captain Jason Shackell and right back Kieran Trippier on the verge of leaving Turf Moor.

Shackell is the subject of an approximate £2million from Derby County, which the Lancashire Telegraph understands has been rejected by Burnley.

The Clarets are now braced for an improved bid for the centre half from the iPro Stadium.

But that is not the only concern for the Clarets, with Trippier likely to hold talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a £3.5million move.

A medical is also scheduled to take place before the close of play on Thursday, with a view to the transfer - Spurs' second signing of the summer and Burnley's second exit on the back of Danny Ings' move to Liverpool - being completed by the weekend.

Spurs have triggered a £3.5m release clause in the 24-year-old's contract. But Burnley would only stand to receive a fraction of that having agreed a 40 per cent sell-on of any profit with Manchester City when they signed the former England Under-21 international on a permanent deal for around £400,000 in January 2012, following a successful loan spell.

Mauricio Pochettino has faced competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool, Southampton, Stoke City and Aston Villa, among others but Spurs have been the frontrunners for Trippier's signature.

And after missing out on Ings there is even more determination in the White Hart Lane camp to get this deal done.

Derby seem equally focused on re-signing former skipper Shackell, who they sold to Burnley three summers ago, and are unlikely to be put off by the Clarets' resistance to their initial bid.

New manager Paul Clement has received plenty of backing already to sign Darren Bent, Alex Pearce and goalkeeper Scott Carson, with Andreas Wiemann and Tom Ince also on their wanted list, and there is plenty left in the transfer kitty to try to tempt Shackell back to Derby.

The 31-year-old has 12 months left to run on his Burnley contract, and there is no urge to sell, particularly having already lost Ings, the club's top scorer for the last two seasons.

The 22-year-old has agreed to join Liverpool on July 1 once his Clarets contract has expired, although the two clubs have yet to agree a compensation figure, which could yet be decided by tribunal.

Departing Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has spoken of his eagerness to watch Ings' progress at Anfield from afar, after leaving to join LA Galaxy.

But he warned supporters to be patient with the England Under-21 striker.

"He can be what he wants to be - I know the talent's there, he's very young, he's fresh,' Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I think if he carries on learning and developing he can become a top striker and we love top strikers, so the stage is there and I wish (him) the best of luck and I'm looking forward to watching (him) play.

"For me, the supporters just need to be patient with him, he's still very young and I'm sure he'll get eased in gently.

"He might be the type of player that needs that bigger club and does thrive on the pressure.

"He's certainly got the platform there at one of the best clubs in the world to showcase his talents.

"Hopefully he can get some goals early on which will give him the confidence that'll make him feel like he belongs there."
