SAM Boast hopes to put on a show should he get a Tour Series ride with Wheelbase Altura later this month.

The talented Colne rider could be in line to represent the Staveley-based squad at rounds four and five in Barrow and Motherwell after Wheelbase were given guest slots for two rounds.

And the 22-year-old is keen to make an impression.

He said: “It is a big event and a big chance to ride well. It is really popular as well.

“I have done a couple of them before and really enjoyed them so hopefully I will get selected again.”

Wheelbase can call on the experience of Stuart Reid and Andy Coupe for the Tour Series, both of who have ridden the town centre criteriums before.

“The amount of TV coverage the Tour Series gets makes it a very important couple of events for us,” said Boast who competed in the Chorley Grand Prix in April.

“A couple of our guys have ridden well in the Tour Series before so hopefully we can do well.

“The crowds are always really big as well so it is great to ride in front of them.

“I have ridden the Canary Wharf round and one in Edinburgh as well in the past and they were both fast flat circuits.

“The number of people watching was unbelievable.

“The problem will be that as a guest squad we have to start right at the back, it is a hard enough race anyway without starting from the back.”

Boast has been pleased with his start to the season and hopes to keep on improving as he targets a step-up into a bigger squad for 2016.

“I am going better this year than I was last so hopefully I can just keep on improving,” said Boast.

“Next year will be last year as an under-23 rider and ultimately I want to get myself onto a big team but I am not worrying about it too much. I just want to keep riding well.

“There are a lot of development teams springing up now around the country who have a lot of emphasis on younger riders.”

After the two rounds of Tour Series action the next major target on Boast’s agenda is his home race - the Colne Grand Prix.

And he is determined to try and make an impression at a race he has struggled in over the past few years.

“I always target a good result in that because it is my home race and I live right by the course, but I haven’t managed it yet,” said Boast.

“But it is a race I really enjoy and is another criterium race and hopefully I can do well.

“I tend to prefer hillier races but people have told me not to rule out flat courses so we will see.”

The Colne Grand Prix forms the fourth race of the summer Elite Circuit Series which gets underway on July 1. The East Lancashire race takes place on July 15.

Boast’s Wheelbase Altura squad will be riding in Motherwell on Tuesday, May 26, before taking part in round six in Barrow on Friday, May 29.

The series features the leading British squads and Boast could find himself up against Sir Bradley Wiggins, whose TeamWiggins outfit, which also includes Colne’s Steven Burke, is among the competitors.
