FROM Tom Cairney’s sublime curler on the opening day against Cardiff City to Rudy Gestede’s unstoppable shot against Brentford only last month, Blackburn Rovers fans have been treated to some superb strikes in the 2014-15 campaign.

And now you have the chance to vote for your Goal of the Season and decide which player will win the Peter White Memorial Trophy.

The club, in conjunction with the Lancashire Telegraph, created the trophy 14 years ago to mark the memory of popular sports journalist and passionate Rovers supporter Peter White.

Jason Lowe claimed the trophy last year and this year’s contenders can be watched and read about below.

GOAL A: Tom Cairney v Cardiff City on August 8

What a way to kick-off the Football League campaign! Cardiff were leading in the big season opener at Ewood Park thanks to Kenwyne Jones but Cairney ensured honours ended in a 1-1 draw. Jordan Rhodes did well to rob Peter Whittingham with a sliding tackle 25 yards from goal and Cairney did the rest with a beautifully struck shot that David Marshall could only push into the side of the net.

GOAL B: Tom Cairney v Norwich City on August 19

There were just 41 seconds on the clock when Cairney silenced a fervent Carrow Road with a goal of breathtaking quality. A deep free kick from Markus Olsson was headed down by Rudy Gestede into the path of the midfielder who did brilliantly to adjust his body before stretching out his left boot and firing an incredible 22-yard volley past John Ruddy. Rovers went on to lose 3-1 but the abiding memory for many will always be Cairney’s strike of a lifetime.

GOAL C: Ben Marshall v Ipswich Town on October 18

Rovers, reduced to 10 men after Matt Kilgallon’s controversial sending off, were heading for a 1-0 defeat until Marshall conjured up a moment of magic deep into injury-time at Portman Road. Gary Bowyer’s side won a free kick 20 yards out. The taking of it was delayed, however, giving Marshall plenty of time to think about what he was going to do. But the midfielder never lost his focus as he curled an exquisite shot over the wall and into the bottom corner to send the 379 travelling supporters into rapture.

GOAL D: Jordan Rhodes v Nottingham Forest on October 25

Rovers were seemingly set for defeat after going in at half-time 1-0 down at the City Ground. But the second-half arrival of Rudy Gestede sparked a comeback that was capped by a typically cool finish from Rhodes. The striker had failed to score in his previous five games but you would never have guessed by the way he chased down a hopeful punt over the top before rifling an unerring low, left-footed drive into the bottom corner to seal a 3-1 win.

Lancashire Telegraph:

GOAL E: Ben Marshall v Reading on November 1

Just when you thought Marshall could not better his free kick against Ipswich Town, he went and gave you food for thought with his magnificent effort in a 3-1 home win over the Royals which he inspired. Marshall set-up two goals for Rudy Gestede but they were put in the shade by the one he scored himself, a 30-yard free kick, bent over the wall and into the bottom corner, that was so good that it would not look out of place among a catalogue of David Beckham’s best.

GOAL F: Corry Evans v Wigan Athletic on January 17

Evans does not score many goals but when he does they are usually ones to remember. It all came after a corner was cleared only as far as Tom Cairney who had the awareness to slip the ball inside to his midfield partner, who curled a right-footed effort high into the top corner. It was Evans’ first and so far only goal of the season. It did not, however, earn Rovers victory as Wigan equalised in the second half.

GOAL G: Chris Taylor v Swansea City on January 24

Rovers fell behind in their FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to the 10-man Swans. They responded immediately, however, with a fine team goal, straight from the kick-off, that started when Josh King flicked a Craig Conway pass into the path of Markus Olsson. The marauding left-back then hooked the ball to the back post where Tom Cairney headed it back to Chris Taylor who controlled it perfectly before volleying home from close range. It was a goal that set Rovers on their way to a 3-1 win.

GOAL H: Craig Conway v Rotherham United on February 10

This was a goal totally out of keeping on what was otherwise a fairly forgettable 2-1 success for Rovers at Ewood Park. Conway was tight to the left touchline when he took a pass from Markus Olsson. The winger then cut inside on to his favoured right foot and sent a sensational 25-yard attempt over the Millers goalkeeper high into the top corner. It was some way to open your league account for the campaign.

GOAL I: Josh King v Stoke City on February 14

King was unplayable in Rovers’ remarkable 4-1 FA Cup home victory over the Premier League Potters and nothing captured that more than the goal that completed his hat-trick. After good pressing in midfield, Rudy Gestede sent his strike-partner through on goal. There were three Stoke defenders desperately trying to catch King. Their efforts, however, were in vain as he left them for dead before coolly slotting the ball past Jack Butland.

Lancashire Telegraph:

GOAL J: Rudy Gestede v Brentford on March 17

Rovers’ 3-2 home loss to the Bees effectively ended their play-off hopes. But the evening had started so well for Gary Bowyer’s side when a free kick, launched over the top of the Brentford defence by the quick-thinking Ben Marshall, sent Rudy Gestede clear on goal. The towering targetman let the ball run across him before blasting it ferociously past the advancing Bees goalkeeper into the top corner.
