COMMUNITY activists in Glasgow are gearing up for a celebration of their neighbourhood.

Wyndford has gained an unwanted reputation as a crime hotspot, with four suspicious deaths and six residents charged with murder in 2008.

But today young and old from across the community are getting together to fight back.

The area's social landlord, Cube Housing Association, has been working with partner agencies including Strathclyde Police to deliver a day of fun and community involvement.

Stephen Inglis, Cube Housing Association's neighbourhood services manager, said: "Along with the laughs and the fun local people will be able to have their say in how Wyndford grows.

"It's an exciting time to be in Wyndford and big things are happening. Wyndford Fun Day is an opportunity for local people to meet the agencies involved to influence their future."

Bill Carroll, chairman of Wyndford Resident Association, said: "We're a strong community and we want to celebrate the fact we are now formally registered with Cube and can build on promoting the group within Wyndford.

"That's where our fun day comes in."

Last September residents were consulted on what they thought was the best way to improve their area.

And when the results were in, Cube Housing Association and Strathclyde Police put together a new strategy for taking Wyndford forward.

They came up with 'EPIC' - Enforcement, Prevention, Intelligence and Communication. The project has harnessed resources in the area to work towards a better future.

Today's fun day is one of the ideas that came from that process.

The event is sponsored by Cube Housing Association and their contractors, including CMS, Select Facilities, Glasgow Community & Safety Services, Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, and is supported by youth groups, churches and local businesses from Maryhill and Ruchill.

The fun day kicks off at Wyndford Recreation Centre and at open space around 151 and 171 Wyndford Road today from 2pm.
