THE sit-in by parents at two Glasgow primary schools is costing cash strapped education chiefs £2000 a day.

Up to 30 parents have been occupying the gym halls at Wyndford and St Gregory's primaries in Maryhill since last Friday.

Education bosses are consulting on plans to close Wyndford, which they say is only just over half full, and transferring pupils to Parkview primary 1.4miles away.

They are also considering shutting St Gregory's primary, which is 38% full, and moving youngsters to St Mary's primary 1.2miles away.

The moves are part of council plans to shut 25 primaries and nurseries across the city in a bid to tackle falling school rolls and crumbling buildings. Parents at Wyndford and St Gregory's are furious at the proposals and have been camping out in the schools's gym halls.

But a council insider has revealed it is costing £2000 a day to provide security and electricity to the two buildings.

The insider said: "If the parents are still there on April 20 we would have to keep the schools closed and find alternative accommodation for the children and staff.

"But if parents want the schools open for the start of term they will have to come out well in advance of April 20.

"We will need to carry out a deep clean and check no damage has been done."

Nicola Rathmill, one of the parents occupying Wyndford primary, reacted with fury at council claims the building would need a deep clean.

She said: "The school is cleaner now than when we went in. We have scrubbed the floors and have tried to get people to give us paint so we can decorate the hall."
