JOSE Mourinho turned Saturday’s draw at Chelsea into a political dispute, but Burnley fan Alastair Campbell caused a drama of his own after unplugging the club’s official commentator just as the Clarets equalised.

Political heavyweight and lifelong Clarets supporter Campbell was co-commentating for Burnley’s official website at Stamford Bridge.

But he accidentally took the commentary team off the air after leaping up in excitement when Ashley Barnes forced a fine save from Thibaut Courtois late on.

It meant that listeners missed live commentary of Ben Mee’s equaliser seconds later from the resulting corner.

Campbell, former senior advisor to Tony Blair, said: “I was doing the live commentary on Clarets Player and when it came to the corner and shot from Ashley Barnes, I jumped out of my seat and accidentally unplugged the commentary box.

“It meant that the listeners missed the goal and we were off air for a few minutes.

“The commentator was commentating while trying to plug it in - and it was all because I jumped up and down!”

Campbell has defended Barnes in the debate about the incident that led to Nemanja Matic’s red card, disagreeing with Jose Mourinho’s verdict of the incident.

And after the match he was delighted to celebrate a deserved point at Stamford Bridge.

“I thought we deserved it,” he said.

“They should have been out of sight at half time and there were two chances for Costa but we’ve had bad luck this year, not least at United and against West Brom.

“We’ve got a bit of luck this time but it’s a great point and I think the fans are absolutely buzzing.

“Of course we came here before in the cup and beat them but this is absolutely great, it’s brilliant.

“The fans at the end were just loving it.”

Burnley sit 18th in the Premier League table and Campbell thinks the Clarets can survive in the top flight this season.

“I do,” he said.

“I think it will be difficult, we’ve still got a run of tough matches but did anyone think we’d get a point at City or Chelsea? We’ve done both.

“Apart from West Brom when we didn’t turn up and 20 minutes when Chelsea were at Turf Moor, we’ve not been outplayed by anybody.

“This season has been fantastic.”
