CRAIG Conway cut a delighted figure after his first goal of the season sealed Blackburn Rovers’ place in the FA Cup fifth round.

Conway rounded off the scoring as Rovers dumped out Premier League Swansea City 3-1 at Ewood Park this afternoon.

And his 89th-minute strike was made all the sweeter by the fact that he used to play for Swansea’s bitter rivals Cardiff City.

Conway said: “I’ve got a lot of good memories back at Cardiff so hopefully they’ll have smiles on their faces after that.

“I thought we played really well today, matched their workrate and did really well. It was a great win against a very good team, a great display all round.

“We could be doing better in the Championship but that performance will help us massively, especially coming at home.”

Swansea went in front through Gylfi Sigurdsson’s stunning 21st-minute strike despite losing Kyle Bartley to a red card inside seven minutes.

But Rovers levelled within two minutes through Chris Taylor’s third FA Cup goal of the season and went in front when second-half substitute Rudy Gestede, another Cardiff old boy, netted his 13th goal of the season 12 minutes from the end of normal time.

And, after Conway struck, an afternoon to forget for Swansea was completed when Sigurdsson was shown a straight red card.

Rovers boss Gary Bowyer, who lost Lee Williamson and David Dunn to injuries, said: “There was the early sending off but after that we were disappointed with the manner of their goal.

“It was a great strike but we should have closed the ball down better.

“But our response was terrific, Taylor has done fantastically well, it was a great move and a great goal.

“We had to be patient but fair play to the lads they learnt that today, they stuck at it and were terrific.

“Our organisation, our shape, and the way we pressed at times was great. Then we made the short corner count thanks to Rudy, and Craig’s third goal just gave us breathing space.

“We are delighted for everybody, hopefully now we can get another Premier League team in the draw and enjoy a cup run.”
