NEW Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Jason Steele is no stranger to clean sheets.

He has kept two in his first four games between the posts for Rovers and 35 across his 159-match career.

But the 24-year-old’s shut-out in Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Huddersfield Town was made that extra bit special as it came at the end of what he concedes was a ‘tough week’.

Steele was partly at fault for Rotherham United’s freak second goal in their 2-0 win over Rovers last Tuesday.

After Ryan Tunnicliffe, under pressure from Ben Pringle, chose not to clear his lines, he played a pass fraught with danger back to Steele, whose attempted clearance hit the unaware Luciano Becchio on the back and rebounded into the net.

The former England U21s international admits he had never conceded a goal like it before and hopes he will never concede a goal like it again.

But Steele, who is on a season-long loan at Rovers from Championship rivals Middlesbrough, was pleased with the way he bounced back in the Huddersfield stalemate.

“I’ve had a bit of a tough week,” he said.

“Coming into a new club, it’s always tough, and I’ve had a couple of bad bits of luck here and there, but I think I showed a bit of character (against Huddersfield) and I’m looking to improve on it.

“I spoke to the manager and I’ve played 150-odd games and nothing like that (Rotherham’s second goal) has ever happened to me and touch wood it will never happen again.

“It’s one of those things. How often do you see it? Not very often.

“But I’m pleased I came out and showed a bit of character because I could have hid and I don’t think I did that. When you come to a new club it’s the last thing you want to happen to you, when something like that goes against you.

“But it’s life and sometimes life knocks you down and you’ve just got to stand up and be a man.”

The draw with the Terriers meant that Rovers failed to win any of their three matches going into the two-week international break.

Steele said: “Hindsight is a great thing and you look back over the last week and you think we should have picked up more points than we have done.

“But at the same time we came away from Saturday with a clean sheet and we have to build on that.

“During the week we spoke at length about the fact that we score a lot of goals but we are conceding too many and, since I’ve been here, we’ve conceded four goals in four games, which leaves room for improvement.

“But also we’ve kept two clean sheets now and that gives us something to build on.”
