KIERAN Trippier has told fans to expect more from him going forward in the weeks to come as he adapts to the different challenges of the Premier League.

The right back was one of Burnley’s outstanding performers last season, especially going forward, and he finished the Championship season with 14 assists.

He admits he is yet to find his feet in an attacking sense as he gets his first taste of the top flight, but he has been part of an ever-present back four that has impressed defensively.

Trippier, who turned 24 yesterday, insists he has not been told to take a step back, and is starting to get used to the demands placed on full backs in the Premier League.

“This year you’ve got to pick and choose the right times because of the quality of the wingers that I’m playing against,” he said.

“In the Championship wingers wouldn’t track me as much so I’m still learning. I'm coming up to my fifth game now. People should see a lot more of me going forward.

"We want to be tight at the back. I want to make sure the back is locked off first then I'll pick and choose my moments when I go forward this year.”

The former Manchester City trainee thinks he has been targeted by the opposition so far this campaign, something he is working hard to overcome on the training ground.

"I feel teams have been targeting me a little bit,” he said. “I've been working on it with Woany [Ian Woan], the assistant, about ways I can get forward and when I should do it.

“I believe in myself and I believe in my ability. Like against Chelsea it was difficult because there was Hazard, Matic, Schurrle. I'm finding my feet at the top level.

"I'll be looking to make late runs, picking and choosing my moments when I go, crossing from deep. I'll find a way.”

Tripper, and the fellow members of the Clarets’ back four, Ben Mee, Michael Duff and Jason Shackell, have played every minute of the league campaign so far, as well as starting the last five Championship games of last season together.

They have kept two clean sheets in a row and have conceded just once in the past seven halves of Premier League football.

Trippier is pleased with how Burnley have started the season in terms of performances, and said a victory in today’s Turf Moor clash with Sunderland would be ‘massive’ for their belief.

"When we played Swansea and Manchester United we played really well,” he said.

“We could've got more against Palace. A win on Saturday would be massive for us. We just need that first win and hopefully it'll come against Sunderland.

"We just need a another goal and a first win. From there we'll get more confident. The belief will be much higher and you'll see a different Burnley.

"Every game we'll play this season will be hard. We can't start saying that we need to take three points against certain teams.

“Every game, whether at home or away, is going to be difficult. We want to start winning at home for the fans to create an atmosphere like the United and Chelsea games.”

If the Clarets are to pick up a first win of the season they will have to do it without Danny Ings, who has been ruled out of the match with the hamstring injury he picked up last week at Selhurst Park.

Ings applied the finishing touch to many of Trippier’s assists last season, and the full-back is aware how big a loss he will be.

"We're going to be without him because obviously it's his hamstring,” he said. That was similar to me last year and it's a big blow to lose Danny.

“But we've got players like Marvin and Barnesy who are waiting for their chance.

“One of them will be playing - I don't know who - but hopefully they can come on and take their chance and start scoring goals for us. It's a big challenge for whoever plays up front this year.”
