Ajig can put Leicester punters in a commanding position by winning the opening race of the day.

Eve Johnson Houghton's inmate is one of nine runners in a distinctly moderate renewal of the Widmerpool Handicap, with this transition to just shy of a mile and a quarter likely to unlock previously unseen potential.

The three-year-old filly has nonetheless been in fine fettle this summer, and has perhaps not gained the rewards her consistency has deserved.

She has won a race this year, though, when easing home in a one-mile handicap on the Kempton Polytrack.

Ajig then showed back at Kempton a few weeks later that the handicapper has probably not got her number just yet when she was not beaten too far over a furlong shorter.

The daughter of Bahamian Bounty suffered a rough passage towards the line, which did her no favours, but it was the seven-furlong trip which proved her undoing.

Ajig lacked the early boot to go with the protagonists that day, which largely explains why she has now made the rise in trip.

Just as important to assessing her chances here is a solid show over a mile at this track in July, when she was only beaten a neck over an extended mile.

Ajig is tough, reliable and still open to a bit more progress, which can often be enough in races of this nature.

Darting looks one of the more likelier outlets of a winner on a trappy card at Brighton.

The Andrew Balding-trained filly has not shaped too badly in five previous starts and looks to have plenty of room with which to manoeuvre off her revised mark.

Darting stepped up to a mile and a quarter at Nottingham in July and appeared to do enough to suggest it was a wise move.

Despite having been keen early doors, the daughter of Shamardal stayed the trip well to finish fourth, with her jockey not too hard on her once a winning chance had gone.

Although the form has not worked out brilliantly, the NFU Mutual Brighton & Hove Handicap looks a weaker race.

The three-year-old also has very few miles on the clock and is unquestionably one of the least exposed animals in this eight-runner affair.

Freddy With A Y should go well in the Genting Casino Brighton Handicap.

Gary Moore's four-year-old has not won since May 2013 but has consequently slithered down the ratings to a career-low mark.

Freddy With A Y is now 6lb lower than when he struck at Salisbury over a year ago, but did plenty at Goodwood last time to indicate her turn is near.

The gelded son of Amadeus Wolf attempted to make all of the running in a six-furlong handicap and was only worried out if it late on when he edged right under Hector Crouch.

Freddy With A Y enjoyed himself over a furlong farther at Salisbury on his penultimate outing, when second in a claimer, so the decision to step back up distance appears logical.

With Ryan Moore at the helm, any rainfall by the seaside will also bolster his chances quite considerably.

Watered Silk won really well at Uttoxeter in July and deserves a chance of doubling up in the TurfTV Novices' Handicap Chase at Huntingdon.
