THE pupil takes on the master when the Foster’s Golden Cue competition reaches its climax on Sunday.

The winner of the large table and small table events will battle it out at Ighten Leigh Social Club for the right to be crowned overall champion.

And the showdown throws up an intriguing battle as Large Table champion, Glenn Stevenson used to coach Small Table winner Wayne Cotterill when he was a talented teenager.

Master blaster Stevenson rolled back the years to win the Large Table final crown – a title he last won 26 years ago.

Stevenson, who last won the title in 1988, was in white-hot form as he overcame another former champion Russell Large 4-0 in front of a bumper crowd at Ighten Leigh Social Club.

It was a lot closer in the Small Table final where Cotterill beat Steve Almond 3-2. Cotterill took the first two frames, but then opponent Steve Almond got his eye in and turned the tables to leave the outcome of the final on a knife edge at 2-2.

But then Cotterill took charge, rattling in a splendid clearance of 75 to take the title.

“We are all looking forward to the Grand Final,” said event organiser secretary Neil McGovern.

“It promises to be a superb match.”
