Blackburn Rovers to have another look at Jordan Spence - as Ruben Rochina and Leon Best get set to leave

BLACKBURN Rovers are continuing to run the rule over defender Jordan Spence – as strikers Ruben Rochina and Leon Best move closer to the Ewood Park exit door.

Spence, a free agent after his contract expired at West Ham United, will this week be given another chance to impress Gary Bowyer.

But Rovers boss Bowyer has confirmed he is unlikely to sign Carlos Cuellar, who has been training at the club, and Jamie Ashdown, who has been on trial.

Defender Cuellar is no longer at Brockhall while goalkeeper Ashdown is in talks with another club.

Also on their way out of Rovers are Rochina and Best.

Rochina passed a medical with Granada yesterday ahead of his proposed switch to the La Liga outfit.

The 23-year-old is expected to put pen to paper on a four-year contract in the next couple of days.

Rovers, meanwhile, are in talks with Championship rivals Derby County over a loan move for the transfer-listed Best.

It is still unclear whether it will be a six-month loan or a season-long loan or what percentage of the 27-year-old’s hefty wages the Rams will be paying.

But reports from the East Midlands this morning sugggest it will be a season-long loan.

Bowyer said: “Ruben is out there in Spain but it’s a case of always waiting to see until it’s actually done.

“And with the Leon situation, we’ve got to keep monitoring that.”

Bowyer, whose side yesterday rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City, also cleared up the immediate futures of former Sunderland and Aston Villa man Cuellar and trialists Spence and Ashdown.

He said: “Jordan Spence is still here, Carlos was just training with us and now he’s not training with us, while Jamie Ashdown was subject to an offer from another club and I think he’s gone to try and sort that out.

“We’re not blessed with many defenders and it’s been a good opportunity for us to have a look at Jordan.

“He’s been up all week and we need to see him in another game. Hopefully we can get that sorted and take it from there.”

Spence, 24, played right back and centre back for Rovers in a behind-closed-doors clash last week.

And Bowyer would like to strengthen his defensive options before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

But he added: “We could do with some numbers because the ones in the squad at this moment in time, the likes of Yann Songo’o and Jack O’Connell, haven’t got Championship experience, although they’ve got potential, that’s for sure.

“So we just feel we could do with some experienced ones with Championship knowledge.

“But I fully understand the position of the club with Financial Fair Play. It’ll be a case of sitting down with the board and the owners and seeing how we can be competitive.

“If we have to go with what we’ve got, that’s what we’ll do, and with the quality that’s in the squad now, I’d be happy with that.”

Bowyer expects Ben Marshall and Rudy Gestede, who have been suffering from illness, to be fit for Friday’s big season opener at home to Cardiff City.

Summer signing Chris Brown, who has not featured in pre-season because of a knee injury, returned to training on Saturday.

I would imagine the terms of the best loan are he cant play against us and if he scores a few against our rivals , it may turn out to be a shrewed move. Either way the lad clearly does not want to be at the club and its best for all he moves on.

As for Rochina a lot of potential never really realised, hes gone to Granada a club who escaped relegation by two points last year, so there not exactly queuing up at the door for him at the big clubs, again its time to move on from this one and wish the lad good luck.

Two more big earners off the books who shouldn't be missed as they've contributed relatively little the last couple of years. Hope we've made Derby pay a substansial chunk of Best's wages as they will be major rivals this season.

looking at more free transfers!!!! GB is like the loser at the boot fair, going around and around, looking on in envy as people purchase what he wants but he does not have the resources to buy anything, so he goes on the scrounge again and again, wanting something for nothing, walking around the tables until you are left with the utter dross and junk that should just have been taken straight to the tip, not even the charity’s want what’s left, and that’s when Gary gets out his coin purse and makes some purchases, just so he goes home with something. That is the Blackburn Rovers transfer policy now since the Venky’s. what a total shambles and joke of a club.

Best should do well at Derby who look pretty certain to go up this season.
I think he (Best) may admit in the future that he has missed a great opportunity to score a lot of goals by not being in the Rovers side hardly at all last season. And it was all down to himself and his bad attitude and fall-outs at the club.

The dressing room must be a much better place to be this season with most of the `deadwood` gone now. Good Luck to Ruben also as he tries to resurrect a career that has struggled ever to get going. Loads of talent and skill just needs to channel it better at the right club.

Songo'o and O'connell should be given a chance, it's no good saying they haven't got Championship experience, they never will if we keep looking at players with supposedly lots of experience at 24 who will want more money than the ones we have got, he didn't hesitate bringing in Keane and Kane and they had hardly experience at Championship level. No point keeping young players with potential if you are not prepared to give them a go. This is the man who boast's of bringing young players through, and now he is the Manager he doesn't do it.

Absolutely agree with you on this. GB must give a chance to some of these young lads. That is were the future of this club lies and not with freebees from clubs who no longer rate or want them.

Best can't play against us because we hold his registration, if he plays well for Derby then hes playing well against our other opponents, more often than not that will be to our advantage.

We will need to deal with Derby when we play them.

Rovers are better off financially with this decision and they have a monkey off their backs (no racial slur intended it's just a turn of phrase) in the fact he isn't here to spread his poison.

Lets hope he sits on the bench tweeting insults towards his new team mates and upsets the dressing room. Not at all happy with this one it could come back and haunt us. Would have preferred he had gone to another league.

I live across the road from a very keen West Ham who tells me Jordan Spence would be a great signing. He claims to have watched a lot of him and along with many other West Ham fans is quite upset he never got a proper chance there. He tells me most fans were looking forward to him being a regular in the season they got promoted from the championship after he'd spent a few seasons on the fringe of the first team, however Big Sam never saw in him what everyone else at the club (including previous managers) did. Apparently Sam's been trying (as of last month successfully) to run down his contract by sending him out on loan after loan resulting in him now being a free agent. These are the words of a West Ham fan not mine. I've not seen the lad play often enough to have a valid opinion on him.

From what he's said yes. Doubt he's being biased just because he's a local lad either because if he thought we'd made a poor signing he'd give me endless grief. Let's hope he fits the bill. We're in dire need of a decent right back.

I am not quite sure why there are so many Burnley fans on here trying to take the p### out of Rovers fans over the transfer policy this summer. Do these same Burnley fans get so engrossed in everything about Rovers that they have failed to notice the complete lack of quality signings at Turf Moor and almost certain relegation unless there are some signings made very very quickly. The record lowest number of points is almost a good bet. I don't think Ings has signed yet either so he is almost certainly gone for free as well. Just thought I would highlight these little points to you Butnley fans that love this site designed for Rovers fans.

Do these same Burnley fans get so engrossed in everything about Rovers that they have failed to notice the complete lack of quality signings at Turf Moor and almost certain relegation unless there are some signings made very very quickly. The record lowest number of points is almost a good bet. I don't think Ings has signed yet either so he is almost certainly gone for free as well. if rochina comes back to haunt us, it might mean we've got into europe!! so let's hope he does! :)

the simple fact is, if they stayed they could have been haunting us with FFP, so i don't think it would be as black and white as you suggest. it would be great to have kept rochina for his ability, but there is still a huge question mark over his ability to play in a team. if he was never able to adapt to the new rovers team, then keeping would have been a disaster.
best... we i'm not sure anyone is really too worried there. i like our options up front, although we've not seen brown yet. with king as another option there, i think we're covered.

With the arrival of each new journeyman who turns for for a final pay-off the no-dads hail him as the final piece in the jigsaw!

Laughable arrogance form the deluded ones.

The only jigsaw being completed at the moment is the BRFC League One jigsaw, and you're almost there.

What a shambles.
Let's have this conversation again come Christmas time ... we'll see what's laughable then

They wont.

Racist.
Alf Garnett.
Should be a good signing for you :)
