FORMER champions Glenn Stevenson and Russ Large rolled back the years as they booked their place in the 2014 Golden Cue Large Table final.

Large was forced to fight all the way, edging past Simon Blackwell 3-2 in a tense semi-final in front at Ighten Leigh Social Club.

It looked like a stroll for Poplar man Large as he burst into a two frame lead, but Blackwell is made of stern stuff and hauled himself back into the contest, winning the next two frames.

But Large saved the best to last, clinching victory in the final frame to book his place in the final.

In the other semi-final, Stevenson had too much experience, cruising to a 3-0 win against his opponent Simon Lawless.

"With two former champs in the Large Table final it is going to be a fantastic occasion," said Golden Cue secretary Neil McGovern.

"Russ won the title in 1991 and Glenn won it in 1988, so we are looking forward to a terrific day between two of our most experienced competitors."

The Large Table final will be staged at Ighten Leigh this Sunday (1 pm) In the first Small Table semi, Wayne Cotterill, (St Andrews), defeated the Lamb Club's Jimmy Waddington 3-0.

Cotterill tuned up for the tie with a recent 147 break and proved too strong for the 2010 champion.

"The game was a lot closer than the scoreline," added McGovern.

"Jimmy started off with a 38 break in the first frame, but he just didn't take his chances after that."

Cotterill will meet the winner of tonight's semi-final between Peter Doyle (Colne SC) and Steve Almond from Clitheroe British Legion Club.

Doyle posted his best performance of the season with runs of 56 and 57 in his impressive quarter-final victory over John Kershaw.
