Feniscowles ‘A’ undefeated winners of the Southern division of the Blackburn Primary Schools Chess League faced St.Marys’A’, undefeated winners of the Northern division in the play-off final.
As expected, both teams began strongly but soon Feniscowles showed why they were the reigning champions by taking charge on three of the boards to establish a 3-0 lead. The captains, on board one, were the last players to finish.
The game had to be adjudicated a draw as both players had fought each other to a standstill with neither player getting a clear advantage.
The league had been divided into two divisions this season to accomodate Turton and Edgworth who entered two teams in the Southern division.
At the annual Chess Jamboree held at Audley school three teams, Feniscowles’A’, Audley’A and Turton’A’ went into the final round of games with only one point separating them. Feniscowles, last year’s winners, played Audley and won 4-2.
But Turton beat Audley ‘B’ 5-1 to leapfrog over Feniscowles to take the title by half a point.
