I have been clued to the telly the past week or so watching the Commonwealth Games.

There have been those who have batted it off as not a major nations are not there with the big players but I am having not of it.

It is great to see the home nations doing so well, personally I am delighted that Wales have nailed it when it comes to artistic gymnastics!

And there is a big presence of East Lancashire athletes at the Games – and two of them won medals yesterday.

Burnley’s Sophie Hitchon won bronze in the hammer and Laura Massaro – who has been writing a very interesting column in the Lancashire Telegraph – picked up fantastic silver medal.

What makes them so special as well is that they have never forgotten their roots.

As you may be aware, we launched our Grassroots Heroes Awards last week and, as in previous years, they have been more than happy to highlight the importance of the hard work that goes on in amateur sport.

So on the occasion of arguably the greatest feats of their careers, they are in the centre pages of this supplement bigging up the work done at grassroots level.

It is where they started and they have shown what can be achieved with hard work.
