BURNLEY midfielder Scott Arfield has been rewarded for his part in promotion with a new three-year deal at Turf Moor.

The 25-year-old was a big influence in helping the Clarets earn a place in the Premier League with nine goals from his 49 league and cup games in his first season with the club.

Arfield initially arrived on trial in pre-season last summer after leaving Huddersfield Town on a free transfer.

But it did not take the former Falkirk man long to earn a two-year deal and become a first team regular, playing out wide. His positive impact has led to manager Sean Dyche securing the Scot on a contract until the summer of 2017.

“We had a great year last season and this is a club going in the right direction so I’m made up to be a part of that,” Arfield said after signing his new deal.

“I’m delighted to have extended my deal with the club as this is where I want to be playing my football under this management.

“I felt like I was getting back to my best last season and a massive factor behind that was because I was enjoying my football and I felt I could go out and express myself."

And Arfield is confident the Clarets can use the momentum from last season’s success to help them in the top flight.

“We’ve got a great bunch of lads and there is a real togetherness in the squad, with everyone pulling in the same direction,” he said.

“Obviously it is going to be a tough season ahead but if we stick together and work as hard as we did last year then I think we can have a successful season.”

Arfield’s contract news follows on from right back Kieran Trippier penning an extension in the summer and striker Sam Vokes also agreeing a new deal before the end of last season.

Dyche, who has made five summer signings so far, is looking to further strengthen his squad, with Lukas Jutkiewicz thought to be his latest target.

The Middlesbrough striker is wanted by Bolton Wanderers after a successful four-month loan spell at the Reebok Stadium last season, but Burnley are understood to be preparing to hijack the bid with a £1.5million offer.

That figure should be enough to persuade Boro to sell, and it is unlikely that it would be matched by cash-strapped Bolton, although Jutkiewicz has also been the subject of interest from Derby County and Wolves.

Meanwhile, Swansea are reported to have bid in excess of £5million for Watford striker Troy Deeney.

The Clarets had a £5m-plus bid rejected by the Hornets last week.
