THEY call Blackburn Golf Club the town’s hidden secret – but young gun Matthew Jackman is putting them firmly on the map.
The 11-year-old, a member of the club’s junior team and whose hero is American golfer Rickie Fowler, has seen his handicap dip into single figures after beginning the season as a fifteen handicapper.
Matthew stunned the field, finishing eighth from 207 entries in a men's competition at Leyland Golf Club and tenth from a strong field of 187 at the same venue.
Now his performances has seen his handicap slashed to just nine, one behind his dad Mike, who is also a member of Blackburn Golf Club along with Matthew's mum Claire, who plays off twenty.
Father Mike said: “Matthew has been playing golf since he was five and it is lovely to see him enjoying the game so much.
“He has a very good short game and sometimes he gives me a lesson or two.”
Matthew, who attends Bishop Rawsthorne School at Croston and lives in Chorley, said: “I love golf and I really enjoy playing at Blackburn Golf Club.”
Mike added: “We are always encouraging young golfers to give the game a try and if they want to join us they can contact the club and they will be made very welcome.” Blackburn Golf Club 01254 665578.
