Clarets target Baird on verge of move to West Brom

Lancashire Telegraph: Chris Baird Chris Baird

CHRIS Baird was last night closing in on a move to West Bromwich Albion.

Baird spent the final weeks of the 2013/14 season at Burnley, making seven appearances to help the Clarets reach the Premier League.

The 32-year-old had only joined Burnley on a short-term deal but boss Sean Dyche had been interested in bringing the Northern Ireland international defender back to Turf Moor for the new campaign.

Baird has considerable top flight experience from his days at Southampton and Fulham, and the Clarets’ interest remained despite the club recently making no official mention of Baird in a list of players in negotiations over contracts. But Burnley knew that Baird faced a difficult decision if he was to rejoin the club, with his family based in the south.

West Bromwich Albion have held an interest in Baird for some time and, following the recent appointment of Alan Irvine as their new head coach, they have made their move to capture the right back for the 2014/15 campaign.

Baird was reported to be undergoing a medical with the West Midlands club yesterday as he puts the finishing touches on a move to the Hawthorns, having also held discussions over personal terms.

West Brom were keen to wrap the move up quickly, with their squad returning to pre-season training today.

Burnley were always realistic that they could miss out on Baird and had already been assessing other defensive targets as they look to strengthen their squad in readiness for their tilt at the Premier League.

This is ridiculous, we are fast becoming a laughing stock in the transfer market as players fall over one another to leave and our targets would rather go to championship clubs. Gotta be something amiss here
All we need now is for Stephen Reid to sign and our embarrassment will be complete.

Has there ever been any club promoted to the Premier League with such a close season preparation?

Players turning you down left, right and centre, a few poor quality signings and your key player quite obviously looking to leave. Where's your ambition with £120m effectively in the bank, as we're continually being told. Not over spending or over stretching yourself is one thing, but this is a joke!

Ha ha ha calm yourselves down Blackburn scruffmonkeys.

We will be fine, We are signing good, experienced PL players such as Matt Taylor and potentially Steven Reid, Troy Deeney should hopefully move a step closer to being a Burnley player this week as we have had a bid of £6 million rejected but will go back with an improved offer.

We have also been linked with Gnabry at Arsenal who is an excellent player and also Harry Kane from Spurs and Jordan Ibe from Liverpool on loan deals.

Oh, and it appears that Danny Ings is signing a contract extension tomorrow.

I suggest you worry about your own set of underacheiving mercenaries, but I suppose you smackrats are happy with Luke Varney and Chris 'The Lump' Brown added to your already crap squad.

Can sign end of career last pay day journeymen though can't sign the one you want that has inside knowledge of the club and facilities. Seaks volumes.

The rest of your post is just hopeful nonsense. I've linked myself with a few page 3 girls in my time. Even if Deeney isn't yet another one using you to lever a better offer from any other club, he's still unproven in the Prem, as is Shorn Douche. Face it, you're in schtuck.

34 years my backside. That one was well and truly put to bed on your own ground when we took the 3 points which denied you a play off place. You seem either unaware or ignorant of the 46 year stretch of Burnley dominance. Much greater than the paltry 34 which you could only manage. Suggest a change of name or you will continue to look silly before your post is even read.

As for the cheap jibes at our recruitment so far, weren't you lot saying the same this time last year? Thin squad, wheels will fall off, injuries will scupper any promotion hopes, no one wants to come to Burnley, etc. LMFAO.

Face it, the three most important signing this season (All of which YOU predicted would move elsewhere) were Dyche, Trippier and Ings - all of which have now signed new deals.

As for Chris he did say moving to the north was an issue long term. Let's not forget he is 30+ and only brought in to cover for Tripps for seven games. Yes PL experience is a plus but he couldn't even get in the relegated fulham team last season so let's not get things out of perspective.

Look guys, quick question for all the Burnley-obsessed Blackburn 'fans':

Given the problems you have had at RB last season, would you sign Steven Reid?

Of course the answer is yes, when you consider that you are thinking of playing Jason **** Lowe there and yet here you are criticising Burnley signing a player that would walk into your first team.

How embarrassing.

Chris Baird lives in near Newbury. He flagged up the matter of up-rooting family and the distance required to Dyche. It has been reported in this paper several times.

Burnley made him an offer but thought that, if another offer was available closer to home, that's Prem based at decent pay, he'd take it.

West Bromwich is 90 minutes and around 100 miles from Newbury. Burnley is around 220 miles and 3.5 hours from Newbury. Burnley would require relocation. West Brom doesn't. Both are in the Prem.

This is not even a bloody news story, unless its "player makes logical choice given his circumstances".

Really what Burnley should do is spend an absolute fortune on duck-eggs like Etuhu, Campbell, Best, etc and run up a £60 million debt. It’s the only way to run a sensible business. Then they could go and sack a few managers and pay them out and employ Shabby for some real enlightenment. Then pay off the players all adding to the £60 million. Further they could sell season tickets at a giveaway price (Poundland Rovers) and further add to the debt. It all makes real good business sense.

Poundland Rovers?

Not even that mate, they are actually shopping in the footballing equivalent of the bins outside Poundland for their signings. A guy not wanted by a Leeds side that just about avoided relegation to the Third Division, and a 'striker' who is almost 30, that has never reached double figures in a season, who fired his side to relegation last year.

Blackburn are desperate.

Is that the same club you talk of that assemble a squad to win the Premier League for £21.15m then subsequently sold on the same players for £53.65m? Won the top honour AND made a profit!! Not that making a profit was the main intention, that was to make history. And we did.

That same club then went on to be the model club working within it's means to win a major domestic honour.

These are things a Bumey an can only dream of. You have no ambition, you're from the gutter and you will return to the gutter. And soon.

Face it, the three most important signing this season (All of which YOU predicted would move elsewhere) were Dyche, Trippier and Ings - all of which have now signed new deals. One of the questions in the Pub Quiz last night...

"From top the Premier League to a mid-table second division football club run by Indian chicken farmers with debts estimated to be upwards of £60million. Name that club?"

It took a few minutes but I got it in the end..
The question does not make sense! 'From top the Premier league'

ummmm I guess you didn't attend school.

No capital letter at the start of a sentence?

No full stop at the end of a sentence?

The most EPIC of epic grammar correction fails.

Ouch, how embarrassing for you - just like your team eh?

Well there isn’t a ten bob store or I would have likened it to that. What I should have added was that we can career down the leagues and end up totally a washed up outfit.

And soon.
The club is £60 million in debt (at the last count) and rising. Is going nowhere despite the best efforts of Boyer. They are FINISHED. FINISHED. Get it in your head. They have been profligate in the extreme and are now paying the price.

Just a few more crap signings - more journeymen just out for a big fat pay cheque - and you'll be well and truly stitched up. Yes you'll have the money from the promotion but as ever this won't be spent to keep the Dingles in the Premiership. Its more important to your Board to bring "stability" to Bonley and to line their own pockets
