Clarets eye Taylor and ponder second Deeney bid in transfer re-think

Lancashire Telegraph: Matt Taylor Matt Taylor

BURNLEY have been forced to turn their attentions to new midfield targets after Craig Bryson staged a shock U-turn to stay at Derby County, but the Clarets have not given up on a club record move for Watford striker Troy Deeney, despite a rejected offer.

The Premier League new boys are also understood to be closing in on versatile former West Ham midfielder Matt Taylor.

Manager Sean Dyche has been formulating his squad in preparation for top flight football, and Bryson was set to be another piece in the jigsaw after landing winger Michael Kightly on a permanent deal from Stoke and goalkeeper Matthew Gilks on a free transfer from Blackpool.

But events took a surprise twist after the squad reported back to their Gawthorpe training base for duty yesterday, when Bryson instead opted to sign a new five-year deal to stay with the Rams.

MORE TOP STORIES:

Burnley had expected to be adding the goalscoring midfielder to their squad after triggering a £750,000 clause in his existing contract and holding talks last week.

Derby were against the cut-price sale of a player they valued at around £2million, although investigations by the Professional Footballers’ Association into the terms of his contract showed there was nothing to force the Clarets to make an improved offer if they remained the sole bidders.

Even sources close to the 27-year-old expected the situation to be resolved quickly and for Bryson to arrive at Turf Moor before the weekend.

But after his 16 goals put Derby on the brink of promotion, losing out to QPR in the Championship play-off final in the end, Bryson was persuaded to stay at the iPro Stadium and signed a new deal running until 2019.

It is the second blow Burnley have suffered this week, with their undisclosed offer for Deeney turned down.

After Norwich City had a £5m offer rejected earlier in the summer it is thought that the Clarets’ bid was in the region of £6million – doubling the record figure they paid to sign striker Steven Fletcher from Hibernian ahead of their last Premier League campaign.

Watford are braced for improved offers, with Burnley facing competition from other clubs.

Norwich have retained their interest and Aston Villa are also tracking the 26-year-old, who scored 24 Championship goals last season.

Taylor, meanwhile, would be a free transfer after reaching the end of his Hammers contract.

The 32-year-old is familiar with the north west having spent three years with Bolton in the Premier League.

Burnley tried to force a move through for Bryson, even getting the PFA involved to try and get him through the door on the cheap. It was like when United tried the same with Jones, whipping out the release clause as some form of price tag.
The telegraph today says BFC have to revisit their transfer policy, result. Now we're on about signing over 32's on massive wages and maybe conducting ourselves in a proper manner instead of gushing all over the press, the release clause of a transfer target.
Our well run club will no longer be able to shop at the pound shop now we are pushing for Europe.
Players move for money and money alone, you can't poach championship players with championship wages. We will have to start looking to the lower leagues and cast offs who can still do a job. I just hope we don't sign players who are completely past it like. Matt Taylor and Stephen Reid.
Things are warming up nicely ready for the big kick off.

What, obsessed Second Division supporters on here first again?

The club that has so far signed Luke Varney and Chris 'The Lump' Brown are criticising another clubs transfer policy?

Ha ha ha ha - good luck next season, I am hearing a whisper that if we don;t get Deeney then Rhodes is next on the menu - be afraid because you all know if Burnley want him, he will come.

Rhodes and Ings up front - hmmmmm.

In your nightmares sunshine, you know that we are a bigger draw now, and can offer him something you NEVER will - Premier League football.

If he wants to get back into his international side he needs to be scoring goals at a higher-profile club in a higher profile league, not rattling around mid-table in the Second Division desperately carrying Blackburn Rovers.

If we want him, he will come.

Go ahead if you want him. Realistically though most sensible clarets know that their board won't shell out up tp 10 million and over £35,000 a week to tempt him. Venkys don't want to sell him, have him on a four year contract and won't sell him cheap. Again, put your brain in gear rather than coming out with ridiculous comment every day.

Regarding the article it looks like you have competition for Deeney so good luck there. Regards Taylor , I'd be wary of any player who Allardyce is prepared to let go. He's a wily old fox.

Yeah I bet Jordan Rhodes is just loving life at Blackburn - so far you have had ZERO promotion attempts, you haven't even been in the Top six since the legend that is Steve Kean was manager, he has been dropped from the Scotland squad, and has just watched his club show their ambition for the forthcoming season by buying Chris 'The Lump' Brown from League One.

If we put a bid in, I would imagine it would closely be followed by a transfer request from Jordan Rhodes, you need to understand your place in the footballing pecking order Blackburn, and it is way, way below Burnley (And most other clubs).

Oh dear.... we are moving slowly towards the inevitable conclusion that sees Jordan Rhodes linked with Burnley... if the move for Deeney doesn't come off I can see Rhodes being looked at as someone who can come straight in to partner Ings while Sam Vokes is out through injury until the new year.

It's no wonder the Blackburn fans are starting to get all edgy, they desperately want Burnley to sign Deeney then we might turn our attention to the midfield and leave their prized asset alone.... who knows.

The problem with that is that you are in a dire financial position and an offer of around 6 million although not ideal for you has to be worth considering. It brings a reasonable amount of money in, all be it you still owe Huddersfield a hefty chunk more important you're shaving 35-40 K a week off your wages bill.

Anyone who thinks both players wouldn't strengthen an already excellent side are just daft. Three of our players made team of the season. We had the best strikeforce, the meanest defence. If we weren't successful in the PL and got relegated, we'd just boss the chanpionship, take 6 points off Rovers instead of 4 and go straight back up. What is important here is direction of travel. Of course not the best quality, well established happy massively paid PL players aren't going to risk coming - this year at least. But what direction are we going? Promoted. Adding players (maybe) at 5-6 million. Signing experienced PL players, an international keeper as a reserve. And (try not to scream Rovers fans) keeping the cream of the championship right here. We are heading in exactly the right direction. No flatline stagnation here. No trimming the quality out and pretending it doesn't matter. Great times indeed.

Super Claret says...

Rhodes is trousering £40,000 a week or £2.08million a year.

He has 3 years remaining on his contract and so will cost Blackburn Rovers a further £6.24million in wages alone, this is assuming he doesn't demand another pay rise.

The original transfer fee of £8million to Huddersfield Town was agreed in staged payments and £4million is still outstanding. Huddersfield Town will also benefit from 20% of any profit made when Rhodes is sold, if he is sold for anything above £8million which is unlikely.

Blackburn Rovers have therefore to find a staggering £10.24million over the next 3 seasons just to keep hold of one player!

£10.24million in the Championship when you are already running with a £25million wage bill and losing over £35million a year is a completely unsustainable and precarious position, particularly with the new rules on financial management in place.

The FFP loss limit for the 2014/15 season is £3million.

The words "financial meltdown" cannot do justice to what's going on at Blackburn Rovers, and when it all becomes public information in December there is going to be a backlash from the Rovers fans hitherto unseen since the Shadsworth Spar ran out of Spicy Pot Noodles.

Of course Rhodes will be sold. But so will all your other players of value. You have to understand that there is no quick fix here. You will have to cut costs on a massive scale to comply with the rules and its clear some of you are in for a hell of a shock when the Venky's dirty laundry is finally aired.

It's going to be absolutely hilarious!
Jordan Rhodes is a handful for any defence but a but less flexible than Ings, Vokes or Barnes. He has no PL experience, would obviously love to do that with Blackburn but that's looking less likely this season than last. At any club he would be first name on the sheet, except a PL club. For all the speculation on Ings and Rhodes they're both untried, a gamble in January maybe. When Ings will have shown if he can cut it in the PL and Rhodes won't. So this 10 mil? What's that about then? A 6 mil+ (rumour) is chicken feed to the fans of a cripplingly indebted club, but other than a rival in the same division who'd take a punt on Rhodes? I do hope HMRC get paid this season as they got caught with Portsmouth, Blackburn and Leeds won't be so lucky. The irony is that Rhodes might have to go cheap to pay the tax and NI on his own ridiculous wages.

Ha ha pull the other one, i'm not afraid, none of the other targets you would pay for have jumped at the chance ha

If we put a bid in, I would imagine it would closely be followed by a transfer request from Jordan Rhodes, you need to understand your place in the footballing pecking order Blackburn, and it is way, way below Burnley (And most other clubs).
ha ha stop it, you should be on stage! Rhodes has apparently has interest before and the club and himself have never budged an inch to suggest he will be leaving.

As for your bid, have you ever made an offer close to the £10 million mark?
Take the blinkers off and keep looking at Deeney and Sordell- they are in your price range!

Anyway lots of dingles say Rhodes is average and won't do it in prem blah blah blah, so why are you getting aroused
Not aroused my deluded horse fancying chum, just realistic. We are in the market for a decent striker and you have one, stop with the indignant panicky replies and just think about it for a moment realisticlaly.

'Have you ever made an offer close to £10 million' What has that got to do with anything? We haven't had a senile old man's life savings to blow in the top flight like you guys have, so no, we haven't.

So you honestly think a player on 40k a week already will come to Burnley?

Rhodes is on £35,000 a week and until someone comes in and offers him more he's happy where he is. If someone offers him more Venkys have a problem but the fact he's on a four year contract guarantees a them a top fee.

The first sniff of Premier Football and it's bye bye Rhodes, you know it and I know it and the money received wouldn't be spent on a replacement, it would go to plugging the gap. You HAVE to sell a player that is crippling you financially.

Tiny Second Division clubs like Blackburn just can't afford to have a player on £40k a week - it is simple economics.

Your brilliant!!!! £10 million 'what has that got to do with anything' she says, well let me explain, just like when you go to the shops for your cigs you have pay for them (most places do but I understand that in Burnley you steel), you have to use money (benefit money to you).

Well in football its the same- if you want a player you buy them, and Rhodes will cost in the region of £10 million. This has always been the case whenever he is 'wanted' the club say an offer of this or more!

My valuation of Rhodes is based on your offer (failed) for Deeney. If deeney is worth more than £6 million, possibly 7 or 8 mill, surely a player who is younger and has consistantly outscored him is worth more ?

So you honestly think a player on 40k a week already will come to Burnley?
What medication are you over using?
Do you honestly think that Rhodes is happy carrying Blackburn Rovers? I mean really?

The first sniff of Premier Football and it's bye bye Rhodes, you know it and I know it and the money received wouldn't be spent on a replacement, it would go to plugging the gap. You HAVE to sell a player that is crippling you financially.

Tiny Second Division clubs like Blackburn just can't afford to have a player on £40k a week - it is simple economics.

if we want him - he will come.
If Burnley wanted Rhodes he would cost 10 million and he would want 40k a week. That's exactly the reason why Burnley don't want him, they shop at the pound shop for dented cans with no labels on them, they say steak on the outside and when you open em up they have dog food in them. Eventually you get that hungry that dog food hits the spot That's the risk the directors are willing to take.
Sack the board or enjoy your dog food

Wow, just wow.

In case you are unaware Burnley got promoted into the Premier League, and with that is a windfall of cash, hence why we have bid £6 million for Deeney. If we offered the same for Rhodes, Venkys would be FORCED to sell him because of the fact that his wages alone will see you hit by a Transfer embargo in January.

I know and the rest of your cave-dwelling clan are living in denial, but you would accept a lower bid for Rhodes and you know it, so all your bluster and insults are, like your team, funny but ultimately pointless.

Burnley and Sean Dyche spent just £400k in the Championship last season and what happened?

We achieved automatic promotion after finishing in 2nd place on 93 points, having played the best football seen in the division, with the best defence, having conceded the fewest goals and ... LOL .... we actually finished 23 points above you circus clowns.... 23 points!

Do you honestly see the likes of Varney (0 goals in 12 games) and League One Chris Brown bagging you 23 points between them?

I think the start of the season will see a few of these no-dads being forced to wind their necks in. When FFP arrives they won't know what's hit them.

I know and the rest of your cave-dwelling clan are living in denial, but you would accept a lower bid for Rhodes and you know it, so all your bluster and insults are, like your team, funny but ultimately pointless.[/p]
Far be it for me to point this out to you but Rhodes would have to agree and that aint gonna happen.[/p]
So do you think Rhodes is enjoying life in the mediocre lane with mid-table nothing team Blackburn?[/p]
We can put this one to bed now as we have signed 21 goals in 75 appearances Sordell. As opposed to Blackburn Rovers signing of Chris Brown with a world beating 58 goals in 313 appearances?

Come on Barry, you're making yourself look silly again.

Blackburn Rovers are staying down forever.

Congratulations you have wrote the biggest load of bullocks I have seen this pre-season on the forums dimwit.

Yeh and Rhodes is going to Barca for 40 mil, Blackburn will of course get an additional 120 mil from promotion that they would have won if they weren't so average. The rattle heads will deny that their best chance was 2013-14,but their board are dumping players, cutting costs and bricking it. Dimwits are knee deep in Blackburn, fools with the brain of a gnat, billy no mate trolls -,Yeh you're real clever, stain every seat you sit in no doubt.

And even if you never have to pay back the 65 mil to India you'l bleed money like a stuck pig for the next 3-4 years. Bloated out of control and you'r one shot PL return became 2 until your board wised up and fly tipped players it had made millionaires. You quite literally screwed up royally and yet think the fans of the club doing the opposite are deluded? Burnley - assets many debts nil. Blackburn - debts many assets . .. er ....... That'll be Rhodes then. Only an outstanding tool would criticise our transfer policy from inside the footballing equivalent of Imelda Marcos' shoe cupboard.

But you've proved a few times over just the last few days that players are prepared to turn their nose up at Premier League football, and more particularly your Godforsaken club.
