I SAW a lot in my career – but I never saw a player bite another player.

It’s the worst of the worst in my eyes, I just can’t get my head around how any player could do it.

So for Luis Suarez to do it for a third time, well, I agree with the big ban that has come his way.

He is a brilliant footballer, an unbelievable footballer, but there’s something that just goes off in his brain.

Don’t get me wrong, players lose it. But usually when players lose it they kick or punch another player.

That’s not right either.

But biting, I just don’t understand it. I saw one player spit at another player a few times in my career and that was absolutely awful. But biting is the worst of the worst.

I would much prefer to be on the end of a bad tackle – and I’ve lost count of the amount of times I was – than be bitten.

In my day you were wary of certain players because you knew a bad tackle would be coming at some stage in the match, especially if you were getting the better of them.

They would try and wind you up first and foremost and if that didn’t work, they’d resort to kicking you.

But you can’t see biting coming.

It wasn’t even if there was a proper altercation leading up to it, Suarez just bit the Italian defender.

It’s a coward’s way out.

Suarez should have learned his lesson, as it’s not the first time he’s done it, and it’s such a shame as it’s taken a bit of the spotlight away from what has been a really enjoyable World Cup.

Well I say enjoyable as you can’t call England’s performances that.

Before our first game against Italy I said in this column that I thought we would go out if we lost.

Unfortunately I was proved correct but I never thought we would go out with such a whimper.

In that column I also said Phil Jones needs to find a set position and his performance, at right back, against Costa Rica, underlined that.

He doesn’t look the same player he was at Blackburn Rovers and he really needs to tell his new Manchester United manager he wants to be a centre back.

And if he’s not going to be a centre back at Manchester United, well he’s going to have to move on.
