Turf chief looking forward to fixtures
BURNLEY have the mental strength to cope with tough times in the Premier League, according to co-chairman Mike Garlick.
The Clarets’ top flight adventure will draw closer on Wednesday morning with the announcement of the fixtures for the new Premier League season, which kicks off on August 16.
That is something Garlick is relishing but he has warned that the season will be more mentally challenging for the club than the Clarets’ promotion campaign.
“I think we know that whatever happens we won’t win every game,” Garlick said.
“Of course we will go into every game trying to win, but we can’t expect that. There might be times when we lose three or four games. Most teams do in that division.
“Everyone at the club – players and fans – has to be prepared for that.
“But we have a good unit and mentally strong players.”
Burnley fans will be perusing the fixture list in great detail on Wednesday but the Clarets enjoyed success in the Championship because of Sean Dyche’s strict ‘game by game’ approach – looking no further than the next match at all times.
Garlick says that will again be the mantra in the Premier League.
“I’m looking forward to the fixture list and we’ll approach it the same way as last season,” he said.
“I know people will be looking at the big games when the fixtures come out, but we will look at who we play on August 16 and keep the same mantra.
“We won’t overthink it, we’ll approach that first match in the right way and take it from there.
“We will take it one step at a time.”
Following their promotion to the top flight, Burnley have received a bye in the League Cup and will not be in the first round draw tomorrow morning.
They will enter the competition in the second round on the week commencing August 25.
