BURNLEY Rugby Club were recently shortlisted for a prestigious award for the work it has done in the community.

Club president Mike Skelton and player/coach Simon Finnan travelled to Twickenham to represent Burnley at the first RFU President Awards.

The club was nominated in the Community Engagement category, after being shortlisted from over 200 application.

Although the club missed out, Finnan, who is also the community coach for Burnley said it was a privilege to have made the shortlist.

“Unfortunately we did not take the trophy but for the club this was a real achievement,” said Finnan.

“To get this close is a credit to all at Burnley RUFC from volunteers, children and adults who represent the club and who do an enormous amount of work for community rugby in Burnley.

“As a club we would like to congratulate Keswick RUFC who won this award and all the other category winners at the event.

“It showed there is some really good work going on at grassroots clubs across the country.”

The club received a certificate from England World Cup winner Jason Leonard and got to watch the England versus Barbarians clash.
