Bury Broncos A 14

Burnley and Pendle manager Bob Lennard was full of praise for his side after toppling league leaders Bury Broncos ‘A’ on their travels.

While Lennard gave special praise to the efforts of Sam Walker and veteran Howard Metcalf he said it was a victory every member of the team contributed to.

The visitors twice held off fightbacks from the Broncos with some rock solid defence while at the other end, ran in some impress tries.

Sam Hamer, Sam Mounsey, Bill Waddington, Matt Crowley and the impresseive Walker all scored tries with Marcus Farnworth adding a couple of conversions.

“It was a fantastic performance by the whole squad with a special mention to Sam Walker, who seemed to be everywhere and veteran, Metcalf playing the whole 80 minutes in the front row,” said Lennard.

“While a couple of players have received a mention, the whole squad performed for each other to gain an impressive win against the league leaders.”

Hamer touched down first for the visitors, shrugging off tacklers to stretch over the line.

Farnworth made no mistake with the conversion to give Burnley and Pendle and early 6-0 lead.

Burnley and Pendle were coping with the difficult conditions the better and were beginning to get on top.

And they added a second try when scrum half, Crowley found Mounsey who outpaced the covering defence to score and make it 10-0.

But this seemed to galvanise the home team who hit back with two tries to close the gap to 10-8.

The next score was always going to be vital and with the clock ticking down to half time, it was Burnley and Pendle who got it when Walker put in a deft kick across the tryline and Bill Waddington scored for his first try of the season to make it 14-8 at half time.

Crowley gave Burnley and Pendle breathing space in the second half when he broke from deep and outpaced the Broncos full back to score under the posts.

Farnworth converted to make it 20-8.

But the home side weren’t done and they hit back immediately with a converted try to make it 20-14 and all to play for.

Once again thought, Burnley and Pendle showed resilience and it was fitting Walker should put the game to bed, taking a quick tap penalty to power over in the corner.
