Burnley Belvedere U14s showed nerves of steel to win the Lions Clubs International annual football competition in a penalty shoot-out.

Belvedere beat Bolton’s Ladybridge FC 3-2 on spot kicks after the final finished goalless.

But Belvedere proved they had the stomach for a shoot-out having already beaten Burscough Juniors 12-11 on penalties in the semi finals.

The competition, sponsored by Burnley Lions Club. was held at the JMO Sports Park, Blaguegate Playing Fields in Skelmersdale where 10 teams from as far away as Penrith fought to reach the semi-finals, in which the first in each group played the second in the other respective group to determine the finalists who played for a the trophy.

In the first section, Belvedere, under their manager Paul Gidley, won all their matches against Sacred Heart College (2-1), Castletown JFC (3-0), Birchwood HS Blues (3-0) and North Walkden (3-1) to score the maximum 12 points.

Medals were presented by Lions District Governor, Liz Axton, while Frank Seed of Burnley Lions Club received the Lions shield for sponsoring the winning team.
