Pearl Secret can make amends for a curious outing at Newmarket at the start of the month by winning the Betfred Temple Stakes at Haydock.

David Barron’s five-year-old pulled too hard in the early stages of the Palace House Stakes, before he stayed on sharply at the death.

The son of Compton Place eventually finished eighth, but was only beaten just over three lengths and would arguably have got much closer to the protagonists had his jockey given him more freedom earlier in the race.

Before that chastening experience, he looked the essence of vitality upon his return from an enforced lay-off when an easy winner of an admittedly moderate conditions stakes at Nottingham.

Memories of his terrific performance at Royal Ascot last June were polarised by that success when Barron’s speedball excelled against older horses to take third place behind Sole Power in the King’s Stand Stakes.

Pearl Secret is now older and wiser, so it is entirely logical to expect him to be even better this season, granted an uninterrupted passage.

But perhaps the biggest thing in his favour on Merseyside is his fondness for cut in the ground.

Heavy rain is forecast at Haydock, which can only be considered a good thing as it could feasibly blunt the finishing kick of Sole Power and Hot Streak.

The latter is a serious danger in the same ownership, but racegoers have also yet to the best of Pearl Secret, who should be available at decent odds.

Joyeuse can reap handsome dividends for a descent in class when she runs in the Betfred EBF Stallions Cecil Frail Stakes.

Frankel’s half-sister has done well since she made a startling debut at Lingfield last May, but, given her esteemed sibling, her performances have been slightly devalued.

That said, her stout third in last season’s Albany Stakes was hardly a disaster, while she also occupied the same position in a strong renewal of the Group Three Fred Darling at Newbury.

Things did not go to plan in the 1000 Guineas, but the decision to revert to six furlongs in Listed company should help Joyeuse rediscover the winning habit before stepping back up in grade.

Good racing at Goodwood, where Gatewood can uphold form with Pether’s Moon in the 32Red Stakes.

The John Gosden-trained six-year-old had Pether’s Moon pretty well held in a similar race at Ascot earlier in the month, albeit in receipt of 3lb.

Although they meet on level weights here, Gatewood has a slightly more appealing profile at this level and will appreciate any further rainfall at the West Sussex circuit.

Northgate Lad is a good shout to take top honours in the Brian Yeardley Continental Two-Year-Old Trophy Conditions Stakes at Beverley.

Brian Ellison’s youngster made a big impression over this course and distance a fortnight ago and looks to have energy and pace to burn.

Any further deterioration in the ground would be no bad thing, either.

Ellison should leave Beverley with a double courtesy of Make On Madam, who runs in the Cottingham Parks Golf And Leisure Club Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

The Captain Rio filly bumped into a good one at Catterick on her last start, but should not be so unfortunate upon her return to the East Yorkshire track, where she finished an unlucky fourth on debut.

Consistent sprinter Hadaj will not let the side down in the toteScoop6 The £2 Life Changing Bet Handicap at Catterick judged by his pleasing second at Ripon earlier in the month.

Classic action in Ireland, of course, with Kingman taken to rule in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh.

Gosden’s much-admired colt hardly lost much caste in defeat in an unsatisfactory Newmarket Guineas, when second to Night Of Thunder.

And with the ground likely to be a little more easier in Ireland, his undiluted class should come to the fore.

Solway Dornal holds claims in the Priory Hotel Cartmel Handicap Chase at the Cumbria circuit, with Liberty Court set to lay down the law in the 32Red.com Novices’ Hurdle at Ffos Las.
