Mill Hill Diversity teams travelled to Lytham St Anne’s on Saturday to play in a tournament of 20 teams – including Bolton Wanderers, Bradford City, Middlesbrough, Fleetwood Town, and Everton.

Mill Hill entered two teams, Mill Hill Blue, who were in Group One, and Mill Hill Red who were in Group Two.

The Blue team qualified for the quarter finals winning all their group matches scoring 24 goals, including a 4-1 victory over last year’s winners Lytham St Anne’s.

The Red team made a great start winning their first game 4-1, but two narrow defeats put them into a last game decider against Bradford City A.

However, two goals in a minute towards the end of the game meant the Blue team finished third in their group and qualified for the Plate last eight.

The Red team were first up and won their quarter final 3-2. In the semi final, they met Bradford City ‘A’ and after the scores finished level at 0-0. It went to an epic sudden death penalty shoot-out which Mill Hill won 4-3.

The Blue team edged ahead in their quarter final before a last minute goal also meant shoot-out drama.

Mill Hill missed their first penalty but keeper Lloyd, who recently attended trials for the England disabled squad, showed his class with four outstanding saves as the Blues went through 4-3.

In the semi final they met Blackpool and edged their way in to the final against Middlesbrough ‘A’.

It was the Blackburn side who did all the pressing, hitting the bar and post and a last minute goalmouth scramble but the scores fished level 0-0.

Once again it was down to the shoot-out and with the scores at 4-4 after five penalties, it was sudden death.

And it was the Boro side who held their nerve to claim the crown.
