LAURA Massaro insists she will take plenty of confidence from her British Open run despite losing to World number one Nicol David in Sunday’s final.

Chorley’s Massaro, the defending champion, took the first set 11-8 only for the Malaysian to hit back and seal win the next three games 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 to secure victory in 64 minutes at Hull’s Sports Arena.

Massaro was in upbeat mood after the defeat.

She said: “I can honestly say I gave it my all today so overall I’m pretty pleased. I knew today would bring out Nicol’s best level, I hoped it would. You want to play players at the top of her game and my main goal was to play my best.

“I wanted to come off today knowing where I stand, whether I deserve to be anywhere near her in the rankings or not. I’m not far away at all, we were both at our best.

“I gave it everything that I had so I can’t be too disappointed with the result. Even though I’ve lost it will give me a lot of confidence going into the next tournament.”

Champion David paid tribute to Massaro after lifting the trophy.

“To win the British Open means the world, Laura played a great match today and I really had to dig deep to win this title back,” said David. “I was playing for my life out there. It felt great to come out on the winning end knowing that all the hard work that you put in does pay off.”

Massaro, who will remain at number two in the world, now turns her attention to the Commonwealth Games where she competes for England in July, but the aim of becoming the best in the world is still there for the 30-year-old.

Massaro added: “It’s a goal to be number one in the world, but she’s a brilliant player. I’m going to have a little break next week as it’s my only chance before the Commonwealth Games.

“I’ve got a lot of doubles practise coming up and I’m really looking forward to the Games.”

Massaro reached the final with a last four victory over Egypt’s number three seed Raneem El Welily, Massaro prevailed 6-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 in 44 minutes.

After that battling success Massaro said: “I get a bit frustrated when I play her, and she gets frustrated when she plays me, I don’t think she enjoys playing me, but there is nothing I can do about it.

“Raneem came out springing around, which is not something that is normally done in women’s game, like a steam train, but there is a reason why it’s not normally done, because it takes so much out of you to actually keep it at the same pace.”
