Bowyer’s joy as ex-Rover Jones earns World Cup spot

Lancashire Telegraph: Phil Jones in action for England and right, boss Gary Bowyer Phil Jones in action for England and right, boss Gary Bowyer

GARY Bowyer has expressed his delight after former Blackburn Rovers star Phil Jones was named in England’s World Cup squad.

But Jones, who rose through the Rovers ranks under Bowyer before making a £16.5m move to Manchester United in June 2011, faces a race against time to be fit for the Brazil tournament.

The versatile defender is recovering from a shoulder injury and will be cut from England manager Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad if he fails to prove his fitness by June 2.

“Hopefully he gets fit and gets a chance to play a part,” said Bowyer.

“It’s great news that Jonesy has been picked and it’s no surprise to me that Roy Hodgson wants to take him as he has the ability to play in several positions and not just as a centre back.

“I’m absolutely delighted for him and it’s a fairytale story for our football club that we’ve had a local lad break through into our first team, do as well as he has did, and now there’s a possibility he could play at the World Cup.

“Everybody at Blackburn can be proud of Phil Jones and it will be a fantastic day for everybody who has had an influence on him if he gets the chance to play in Brazil.”

Jones played for Rovers’ U16s, then managed by the club’s current assistant manager Terry McPhillips, before being fast-tracked into Bowyer’s U18s team, who he helped reach the semi-finals of the 2009-10 FA Youth Cup.

Jones’ U18s team-mates back then included current Rovers captain Grant Hanley and fellow first-teamers Jason Lowe and Josh Morris.

“When you look back now we were spoiled to have those four players in one group,” said Bowyer, who lost Jones for the FA Youth Cup semi-final second leg as he had played for Sam Allardyce’s first team the day before in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Ewood.

“It’s rare that you get so many in one group and that’s something for us to strive for and for us to reproduce in our Academy.”

It will be Jones’ first appearance at a World Cup provided he proves his fitness.

But should the 22-year-old, who grew up in Clayton-le-Woods, Chorley, fail to make it he will be replaced in the England squad by Everton’s John Stones.

Three Lions boss Hodgson said: “He (Jones) had his shoulder injury a week ago and, from what everyone tells me and my experience, it is a three-week injury to be back and playing.

“But we can’t guarantee that. Stones will be Jones’ replacement.”
Bowyer, meanwhile, is this week hoping to firm up a date for his planned end-of-season meeting with Rovers owners Venky’s.

I dare say Steve Kean has already given an interview to The Brunei Times expressing his delight that the lad he discovered could be on the plane to Rio!

Congratulations, Phil. After a very turbulent season for both United and the player, I wasn't sure if he'd be selected. He's not really been able to develop as a centre-half since he moved to Old Trafford but he still retains enough natural talent to influence a game. I'd like to think that, had Kyle Walker been fit, he still would've been slected ahead of Chris Smalling. Actually, I'd have taken Stones ahead of Smalling anyway.

No Gary. The fairytale is getting promoted and ridding ourselves of the loons. either scenario seems a long long way off

ROVERS MUST SECURE BOWYER’S FUTURE.
I will be very surprised if Blackburn Rovers under the guidance of Gary Bowyer do not launch a serious promotion bid next season.
Statistics show that if relegated clubs from the Premiership do not return within the first two seasons they can be in the wilderness for a long time. The Championship is full of such clubs.
Rover’s task will be made harder due to this seasons relegated teams receiving £63 million in parachute payments. Following the stunning new Sky TV deal. That is more money than Man United received last year for winning the title.
This puts Norwich, Cardiff and Fulham at a massive advantage to make an immediate return. £63 million compared to Rovers 1st parachute payment of £17 million.
By being relegated in 2012 Rovers missed the Gravy Boat ‘BIG TIME’. The sacking of Allardyce has come back to haunt Mrs Anuradha Desai in a massive way. Just as I said it would.
Sam Allardyce would have kept us up, just as he has done with West Ham, for the past two seasons. Seemingly Sky Pundit and ex Man United Gary Neville has voiced this opinion in person to Balaji and Venkatesh Rao. Who he has got to know as occasional neighbours on their brief visits.
Still no apologies however to the Rovers fan’s from the Indian owners.
To the Rovers advantage however is they have by accident or by design, an outstanding young British Manager entering his second season as a Number One.
Bowyer ticks all the boxes. He has played the game to a high level. His family are steeped in football tradition. He has done his apprenticeship in Coaching and Management. He has been at Ewood close on 9 years. He knows the club inside out and loves it.
He has worked with outstanding managers including Allardyce and Mark Hughes.
He saw and experienced the turmoil caused by the awful Kean and Jerome ( the man who ruined Blackburn Rovers) Anderson. But kept his head down and learnt from it.
He will not tolerate temperamental footballers and expects nothing less than 100%.
Most important he can ‘Spot a Player’. Look how he pulled out of the hat Craig Conway, Tommy Spurr, Rudy Gestede and Tom Cairney. At little cost to the club. Not to mention others.
He receives his fair share of criticism from the fans. But takes it in good heart. After all, the best managers are on the terraces including myself !!
I can see a successful Rovers side giving rise to Bowyers reputation.
I do not know how long a contract Bowyer has or what his salary is. All I do know is that I would encourage the astute Managing Director Derek Shaw to convince the clubs owners to secure Bowyers long term future. They could just have a prized asset on their hands.
After the awful Kean, Bowyer is breath of fresh air and Ewood Park is a much different and happier place.
After all the turmoil even the crowds are slowly but surely returning.
Venky’s of London Ltd let Gary Bowyer go at their peril.

Notice how any posts criticizing Venkys or Kean are massively voted down by the happy clapping SCABS. And i notice your sly dig at those who chose protest as a way of making their voices heard above the shrill cat calls of people like you in bed with the corporate media (the utter shame of it) who demonized the town, its people and the fans by blaming them for the teams poor performances and the club for the state it was in by saying they intimidated those who "chose to support the team" like those who protested did not support the team and then of course the lame "women and children" nonsense.

What an utter disgrace. You really ought to work for the BBC with imperious arrogance like that.

Firstly, I'm not, nor have I ever been, KDG. Secondly, it's not a sly dig, nor is it nonsense. I witnessed first hand some of the disgraceful behaviour by those thugs using the protests as a front to take out their frustrations on their fellow supporters. As for being 'in bed with the corporate media', behave yourself you clown. I, like the majority of fans who chose to attend the games, had no issue with the majority of fans who chose to boycott the games, I just had a problem with the ar$eholes who tried intimidating others just because they had a difference of opinion.

So, before you start playing the poor little victim, perhaps you should reflect on the fact that it's you - not I - who is ostracising others for not following suit. Imperious arrogance indeed.

...yeah, shifted the goal posts there slightly, didn't you?

Well OK, as you've decided to adopt a more reasonable tone... I would also have a problem with any Rovers fan threatening another. No way would i condone it on any side but you focused on one side no the other in your first outburst.

However, if you don't want me to think you are some sort of mainstream (or should that not be LAMEstream?) media whore then stop spouting the nonsense you did in your first rant about Rovers fans protesting/boycottin
g as being somehow subhuman.

The past few years have hurt us all and we all and we wrestle with our conscience as to how we deal with it; home game only? Away games only? Total boycott? Who knows? Does it even matter. It's up to each of us to decide. There is no right or wrong and we should be considerate to the sensitivities of each individual decision but we don't need so-called Rovers fans like you demonizing those the protest/boycott - we have the wretched corporate media for that.

I no longer live in the town and cannot get to as many games as i would like and so at the time i didn't really have to confront those questions in the white-heat of the Kean and Anderson dismantlement of the club as I watched many of those events unfold from afar.

In the end i've been to home and away games but i don't like giving the Venkys my money; Ive chosen to sit tight and wait for them to go and hopefully eventually someone decent will buy the club or what ever as long as its in safe hands, that's the main thing for us all i would think.

It just annoys me when i see perfectly reasonable criticisms of Venkys and/or Kean getting massively voted down. We should be vigilant and not forget what they have done to out club and the atrocious arrogance they have shown to the people of the town and the fans of the club.

I agree though and do feel a little sorry for them in the sense that they have been given extremely bad advice (some of it possibly criminal) and have been well and truly shafted.

Sarcasm is a beautiful tool Reginald and you should always presume any complimentary remarks on here regarding Steve "what plane" Kean are sarcastic.

You posted a comment accusing us 'SCABS' of threatening physical violence and I responded with the fact that there were some people, amongst the protesters, who were threatening their fellow Rovers fans, and intimidating women and kids, just because they had a different outlook on the situation.

You posted a comment accusing us 'SCABS' of threatening physical violence and I responded with the fact that there were some people, amongst the protesters, who were threatening their fellow Rovers fans, and intimidating women and kids, just because they had a different outlook on the situation. Also, at no point did I post any nonsense about the boycotters being subhuman. I've said that those doing the intimidating were ar$eholes, and I stand by that because that's what they were. Steven Steven Steven, rather than spending time on here trying to reel folk in, I suggest you get some overtime in and make another film cos I've just heard season tickets down Meccano Moor are starting - YES STARTING - at a whopping £600!!!!

You could call the film Out For Justice 2 - Where you eat two senior Burnley board members in one serving cos they've blown the £110 million Premier League windfall on 55 million tins of Ronseal Wood Stain and a tube of Preparation H...
Aye,a local club run by local, Burnley supporting businessmen,a well run club run by locals for locals.
God bless you Brendan,welcome back.
Just to give the whole story (which you probably know anyway.). Season tickets at Burnley were available at last year’s prices up until March 31st. That was well known to all fans and that an increase would apply on tickets bought after that date. By the end of March it was pretty well certain that Burnley would get promoted or at least be in the play – offs by then. So in that respect no excuses. However what they did not say is that the new price would include £100.00 deposit on next season’s ticket and of course who knows what the price will be next season. I would think fair to say that a price increase would apply from Championship football to Premier League, but as you point out it may well be a hard-nosed business decision.

Firstly, I'm not, nor have I ever been, KDG. Secondly, it's not a sly dig, nor is it nonsense. I agree though and do feel a little sorry for them in the sense that they have been given extremely bad advice (some of it possibly criminal) and have been well and truly shafted.

Obviously not you is it, happy-clapper?

The contempt in your sneering sarcasm for ouR football club is in that one snide remark of yours. Such atrocious bluster and disdain not for the Venkys, but for those who oppose what the Venkys have done.

Remarkably extravagant arrogance and btw, you were the one arguing, you did not need to respond to my post. Are you always this studiously stupid or perhaps it's just the happy-clapper way of things?
Snide comment? I was merely pointing out that I wasn't the one stewing over what's gone on in the past. And, once again seeing as how it hasn't sunk in yet, I had no problem with those who boycotted or protested, just those who tried to throw their weight around. As for calling me arrogant, may I just remind you of your initial post where you referred to those of us that continued to attend matches as SCABS, you couldn't sound more arrogant if you tried.
More drivel from the SCAB.

The protesters and fans of Blackburn Rovers have not only been sneered at, mimicked, mocked and treated with dismissive disdain from without - but also from within - The Enemy Within - those Rovers followers that were – and a tiny minority of cranks still are - perfectly happy with The Venky's and their continued stewardship of the club.

During Steve Kean’s management this foolishness reached its ugly nadir, with Kean and Venky supporters typically posting threats and attacks on the woefully flaccid and impotent Lancashire Telegraph’s message forum and other internet sites.

Throughout the protest campaigns, they physically assaulted protesters; threatened to report individuals to the police; attempted to have contributors banned, blocked and deleted from internet discussion forums; questioned the mental health of those that were opposed to the new Blackburn Rovers regime and engaged in slander - going as far in some cases of accusing protesters or anyone that did not support Steve Kean, Jerome Anderson and the Venky's of racism and sexism.

When things took a turn for the worse at Blackburn Rovers, they chose to use the internet as a soap box platform for their views on whatever it was they felt they needed to tell the world via the World Wide Web about those that they considered were not, "proper fans".

Organised attempts to censor the opinions of any one who dared to disagree with their reactionary views were a common feature; having the temerity to accuse those in favour of the protests as being undemocratic and opposed to free speech.

It is little wonder that the Venky's engaged in fascistic behaviour when they banned banners criticizing them at Ewood Park or when they instructed Gerald Jackson, the main anchor at Radio Rovers to turn the volume up through the stadium loud speakers to drown out protesting Rovers fans who had gathered after a game against Tottenham Hotspurs in the Blackburn End to protest; this particular incident which was ignored by the national media has to be the most sickening act of contempt ever displayed towards football fans in the history of the game anywhere in the world.

It is my own opinion that many of those Rovers fans who initially agreed with this type of moral elasticity were Nuevo riche SKY TV SPORTS era fans; those that were not on the terraces of Ewood Park during the dark days of the 1970's and 1980's on a wet Wednesday night against Doncaster with crowds of 9,000. It wasn't the protestors that were some kind of left behind rump of the Jack Walker era; it was those that were opposed to the protests.

Got it now? Also, your continued use of the word SCAB isn't even relevant as we weren't on strike, nor are we a Union. However, the tone in which you use it has now convinced me that you were one of those thugs that I've mentioned above. Perhaps you should spend less time picking on women and kids and more time trying to improve that sh!tty little website of yours. (FYI, seeing as how all of Wolverhampton's major honours were one prior to receiving city status, technically that makes them the most successful town club in the history of British football.

And yes, I will gladly say all of this to your face.
