Hazel heading for Grand Medal Final
1:50pm Friday 9th May 2014 in Sport
BLACKBURN golfer Hazel Sellars led 10 qualifiers for the England Golf women’s Grand Medal Final when she won her regional final by three shots.
Sellars, from Mytton Fold GC, scored net 69 – four under par – at Shrewsbury to lead the 10 qualifiers from the Midlands North Region Medal Final. “I’m shaking, it’s so exciting,” she said.
She will be joined in the Grand Medal Final at Peterborough Milton Golf Club on June 28 by: Abigail Edson (Howley Hall), Debbie Deakin (Mickleover), Romy Bevin (Sandwell Park), Fran Kralev (Lymm), Carolyn Taylor (Little Aston), Jane Hardy (Stanedge), Josephine Spencer (Radcliffe-on-Trent), Donna Hayle (Belton Park), and Trudi Galloway (Belton Woods). They will each be challenged for the national title by the qualifiers from five other regional finals.
All the regional finalists had returned the best four scores at their club in the England Golf Medals during 2013.
Sellars, who was playing off a handicap of 31, is a former hockey player who took up golf five years ago.
“I am so pleased I have found something I really enjoy doing, I just wish I had started sooner,” she said.
But the win came at a price as she was overwhelmed my messages from fellow members.
“I had to spend 10 minutes in the car park dealing with all the texts,” she smiled. “I had a fantastic day, it was amazing. The organisation was been brilliant and the course was beautiful.
“I just seemed to play consistently almost all the way round, I did have one rather high score on one of the longer holes, but it didn’t bother me and I managed to get back into it.”
This was the third of six Regional Medal Finals. The East and South finals have already taken place and the other dates are: Midlands South at Tadmarton Heath, Oxfordshire, on Tuesday, North at Houghton-Le-Spring, Durham on May 21; South West at Forest Hills, Gloucestershire on May 25.
