We have to believe says 'snookered' Rovers boss Bowyer

Lancashire Telegraph: Gary Bowyer Gary Bowyer

GARY Bowyer admits Blackburn Rovers need snookers if they are to overcome the odds and pocket the final play-off place.

But the Rovers boss, whose side are 100-1 to finish inside the top six, believes there is still time for one last trick shot to be played.

The Ewood Park outfit head into tomorrow’s final game of the season at home to play-off bound Wigan knowing they have to win – and win big.

Because as well as requiring Reading to lose at home to Burnley and Brighton & Hove Albion to lose away to Nottingham Forest, Rovers also need to overturn a seven-goal swing on Reading.

Asked if he was facing a near impossible task Bowyer said: “Are you saying we need snookers?

“All we can do is concentrate on our game and try and beat a very good team in Wigan.

“Uwe Rosler has done a fantastic job there. To come from where they were and be in with a chance of getting promotion has been a phenomenal effort.

“We’re aware of the challenge that lies ahead but as ever, we’ll concentrate on ourselves.

“I still believe in the last minute of one of the games up and down the country there will be a twist and the pendulum will swing from one club to another.

“We’ve just got to perform to the level that we can.”

Rovers are unbeaten in 11 matches, the longest unbeaten run in the Championship.

But had they been able to convert two of the six draws they had to settle for during their unbeaten run into wins – victories against Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday were carelessly thrown away – they would be going into tomorrow’s game already in sixth place and not effectively out of the running in eighth.

Bowyer added: “If we are that close and we just miss out there will be a ‘what if’ scenario but this time last year mathematically we could have still got relegated going into the Birmingham game.

“So to be mathematically in with a shot of the play-offs is progress.

“My dad reminds me quite regularly that ‘if’ is the biggest word in the dictionary and I understand what he means by that. But clubs up and down the country will be doing the same.

“We’ve laid the foundations and that was our main aim when we came into the club – to try and get rid of the feeling of negativity around the place – and the mentality of negativity from the public and from the press against Blackburn Rovers.

“I think we might have done a little bit of that this season.

“I think one of our biggest gripes is that we have conceded 11 penalties away from home. Now how many of those were penalties?

“But there have been times when we’ve not quite been at it when opportunities have presented themselves and that’s something we’ve got to make sure, if we can’t pull it off on Saturday, that we are better at next season.”

Never mind GB learn from the mistakes and concentrate on next season. Try to wangle some money out of Venkys and strengthen where needed.
I think we will see a much confident manager and team from the start next season and that should set us up for a better shot at it as we will be more prepared. Lots to look forward to.

i think we all know how it's going to end.....so lets forget about getting in the play-offs....and i think it's wrong for Gary to keep the fans hanging on the hope, or may be it's an attempt orchestrated in India to get a full house tomorrow, either way it's not going to happen....if we're honest with ourselves we've known it for a while, for the impossible to happen we'd need our neighbors to do us a favor, and that's not going to happen.

are we going to get the two wins in a row monkey off our back....can we finish the term on a high.....i hope so...but i'm not holding my breath.

will Gary be in charge next season....without a doubt YES....(the useless chicken pluckers will see to that), is it the right choice...i say NO but that's just me...he's a great guy but he's not a premier league manager (my opinion), he's failed to get the team playing in a consistent manner, yes we've had injuries and so have Leicester, burnley, wigan and reading, it happens in this game....what makes a manager is how you deal with the issue.

my thoughts of promotion by any route went along time ago so my thoughts are getting three points tomorrow and thus winning three games in a row...the first time since 2006, keeping hold of our top players (although i can see a queue forming)....cut the fat off the squad...and give Bowyer 10 games.....if after 10 games we dont have 20+ points then get rid...i'm sorry but if we;re to have any chance next season then we need to put all sentiment to one side and call it how it is,,,,,20 points from 10 games is more than doable if you have any intention of making a push for promotion.

More drivel and inane comments by GB

Do some self reflection along with your fellow lap dog coaches who obviously are as culpable as yourself for how the team has been selected , set up and performed In numerous matches this season.

I will not bother listing the numerous games where the teams set up, player selection tactics and play have been woeful.

Totally agree

By accident or design an often quoted statement in management terms.

Most if not all of the changes have been by accident not design

If Williamson and Lowe were available tomorrow for example what are the chances that they would start in our central midfield like Yeovil which was a match we had to win.

I dont trust that Team GB have the combined accumen to get it right pre season for an assault on the league 2014 2015.

Yes and I still font think he and Gestede are the ideal pairing

Rhodes is an on the shoulder of lsst defender player and not a natural 10 like say a Kevin Phillips Teddy Sherringham who would come short and link midfield and allow midgirlders to get pasy snd beyond strikers.

Rhodes can, t hold the ball up I could go on

Now Best with Gestede could be a far better option for the better development of the all round team with the addition of a quality Right Back.

I've asked you before Matt, who is there out there that's available, experienced with a good track record and willing to work for those clowns?

I get some of your points but you need to be careful what you wish for mate.

GB is needed for another season. If things don't improve (or get worse!) then fair enough, I'd be wanting a change too, but you need to just try and understand the unadulterated carnage the guy took over from. To keep us up and then make a realistic play-off push the season after is unbelievable and playing two holding midfielders, losing at home to Charlton or drawing against Yeovil hardly outweighs the positives.

I totally respect your viewpoint however it started from day one in preseason with some of the worst signings ever to whuch not one actually features in our first team now.

Please look at the Blackburn match day programmes and see who was srill onthe bench for games well into the new year.

Players who when needed to come off the bench and make an impact were never going to do so.

We played with the most negative midfield all season until injuries forced a change and never dealt with our weakest link - our Right Back position
Therefore in my humble opinion Team GB for I will always contest that the whole coaching team are as one have been completely negligent.
Any manager worth their salt will identify the oppositions wesknesses and exploit them which every team did and team GB did absolutely nothing about it until Keane was eventually brought in.

You are entitled to your opinion Matt, the last one you shared was how rubbish Jordan Rhodes is, the week before he bagged a hat trick, have you been self reflecting ever since ?
Yes and I still font think he and Gestede are the ideal pairing

Rhodes is an on the shoulder of lsst defender player and not a natural 10 like say a Kevin Phillips Teddy Sherringham who would come short and link midfield and allow midgirlders to get pasy snd beyond strikers.

Rhodes can, t hold the ball up I could go on

Now Best with Gestede could be a far better option for the better development of the all round team with the addition of a quality Right Back.
So your considered opinion, to which you are entitled, is that you would take Best over Rhodes.

At this point I don't think I need say any more. You clearly have not been watching Blackburn a Rovers over the last two seasons.

Why do we have to put up with drivel from Burnley fans from Turd Moor. GB has done an excellent job in stabilising the club this season. Unfortunately he is not experienced enough to push for promotion next season, we need a manager who has been there and then we will achieve what we want, to be in the Premier League. It is fine Burnley fans gloating but they will be back in the Championship next year, they are not good enough.

our star striker has been Rudy and he has outshone JR for many weeks. he is quick and very strong, hopefully we will resist any attempts to sell him. If we have a transfer embargo looming we should say no we will not sell our best players. We still need to get rid of some crap players and I do not think Williamson is good enough to be retained. Dunny is a true Blue but only half a season performer, i would sell Lowe as he is hit and miss, we need 2 good full backs and an aggressive central midfielder. Defence is good even if a bit lax at times. I will have a small bet at 100-1 on 6th place. Good luck, play like there is no tomorrow and just attic..attack and score 7-0?

we lost our chance to make the play off,s weeks ago so cut the crap and lets just take Wigan apart and hit the ground running next season, and then we can realise our belated dream.
