Burnley Tennis Club held their annual Open Day at their Lower Ridge Close base.

The event was open to the whole community with everybody having access to the courts and clubhouse and every child receiving a Burnley Tennis Club cap and badge.

The morning consisted of free mini tennis coaching with new head coach David Woolstencroft for all children and adults were given the opportunity to have a game of tennis while their children played.

In the newly-refurbished clubhouse there were many activities for the children to enjoy including table tennis and a pool table.

There was also a raffle to win a hamper of tennis goodies including an individual tennis coaching session with Woolstencroft.

More than 100 people attended the event with many children coming from primary schools along with Gary Frayling and John Fifield both councillors for Bank Hall all showing the club their support.

Elaine Varcoe, Burnley Tennis Club chairman, said: “Open day has been a great success and it was fantastic to see children coming from the primary schools where David has been delivering mini tennis to through the School Games Partnership.

“This shows there is a real appetite from children wanting to play tennis and hopefully starts to remove some of the perceptions that tennis is an elitist sport.

“Our aim is to bring tennis to the community by showing that anyone at any age and ability, tennis is a great sport to be involved in.”

Woolstencroft added: “Our open day saw plenty of local primary school children on the courts with a racket in their hand and a smile on their face.

“It was also great to see new adult faces who took to the courts and have chosen Burnley Tennis Club as their club.

“Tennisaces Academy is especially passionate about getting more young children playing tennis and having these open days provides greater opportunity for parents and children to become involved.

Following on from their Open Day, Burnley Tennis Club and Tennisaces Academy will be launching Super Saturdays on Saturday, April 26, for children between the ages of five and 16.

Children pay just £1 for two hours of tennis activity all supported by the head coach.
