REIGNING champions Accrington put one over cup kings Burnley as they lifted the first piece of silverware of the new Foster’s Lancashire League season on Saturday.

Accrington went into the Ron Singleton Colne Trophy, the traditional curtain raiser to the season, as holders and they were in no mood to lose their grip as they started in determined mood.

New skipper Stuart Crabtree, who has taken over from ex-Lancashire man Graham Lloyd, led from the front and he made a majestic 93 as his side posted a daunting 237-8 at Thorneyholme Road.

Crabtree faced just 101 balls and clattered five sixes and six fours and received excellent support from professional Ockert Erasmus, who made 28.

Graham Lalor, Bharat Tripathi, Tom Lawson and professional Chris Holt all claimed two wickets each but it was a big target to chase down.

And with David Ormerod and Jimmy Hayhurst bowling excellent line and length Burnley’s reply got off to a slow start and after 20 overs they were 37-2.

There was no way back from that for them and despite 41 from Tripathi they were never at the races.

Young Jacob Clarke claimed two wickets and Erasmus also bagged a brace with his spin and Burnley closed on 151-9, 83 runs short of their target.
