MICHAEL Kightly’s goal has taken Burnley to the brink of promotion with victory at Blackpool – as the Clarets now need just two points to return to the Premier League.

Kightly curled in from the edge of the box in the 49th minute to secure victory for Burnley at Blackpool.

Automatic promotion could have been confirmed this evening, but Derby beat Doncaster to take the promotion race to Monday. Burnley will now secure promotion if they win at home to Wigan.

Burnley had the first chance of the game when Jack Robinson’s poor backpass played in Kightly, only for Matt Gilks to save.

Ashley Barnes then appealed for a penalty when he seemed to be bundled over in the box.

The Clarets were backed by 2,300 vocal travelling supporters, who spent the entire game on their feet, but Blackpool had a chance when on-loan Blackburn Rovers forward blasted an angled shot wide.

There was another opportunity for Burnley as Craig Cathcart’s slip allowed Scott Arfield to release Danny Ings, whose shot was straight at Gilks.

The Clarets almost went ahead at the start of the second half when David Jones’ short corner found Michael Duff, who controlled in the box before firing wide.

But the goal came in the 49th minute when Kightly cut inside from the right and curled a superb 20-yard effort into the far corner.

The match was held up soon afterwards as Blackpool supporters threw tennis balls on to the pitch and fans then raced across the playing surface in protest at Karl Oyston after the Tangerines’ alarming slide into relegation trouble.

Barnes almost made it 2-0 in the closing stages as he headed over a cross from substitute Junior Stanislas.

The Clarets had to defend resolutely as Blackpool pushed for an equaliser in injury time, as Kieran Trippier made a fine goal-line clearance to deny Harrison McGahey.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche was jubilant at full-time but believes focus is still the key for his side. He said: "We've got to go again Monday, the focus stays the same.

"We knew it was going to be a strange one with all the tennis ball stuff but I thought we controlled that well.

"We always felt we had enough quality to get ourselves in front. One of the main things about the Championship is you have to find different ways of winning."

Burnley: Tom Heaton, Kieran Trippier, Michael Duff, Jason Shackell, Ben Mee; Scott Arfield, Dean Marney (Chris Baird 82), David Jones, Michael Kightly (Junior Stanislas 68); Danny Ings (David Edgar 90), Ashley Barnes. Subs not used: Alex Cisak, Kevin Long, Keith Treacy, Ross Wallace.

Blackpool: Matt Gilks; Chris Basham, Craig Cathcart, Harrison McGahey; Tony McMahon, Isaiah Osboune (Stephen Dobbie 70), Barry Ferguson, David Perkins, Jack Robinson (Andy Halliday 44); Neal Bishop, David Goodwillie (Louis Almond 55). Subs not used: Elliot Grandin, Tom Barkhuizen, Faris Haroun, Andy Keogh.

Referee: Michael Oliver.

I sincerely mean this, enjoy your 9 months of pleasure being at all the fabulous grounds in the Premier League next year, remember we stayed up there for 18 years unfortunately yours will be a much shorter stay.
Try to stay up there for more than one year at least then we can get the local derby back on when we come up to join you.

Enjoy.

Well done Burnley, you deserve to go up and you are the top dogs in East Lancs at the moment. I wish you well and hope you can stay up.

I hope Rovers can follow you but to be honest I can't see it happening for many a year. If we're not in the top flight again in 35 years I will change allegiance and buy a claret and blue scarf. At the moment that is a distinct possibility.

Good luck.

Your going on like we've never been in the Prem. We've been in it for EIGHTEEN YEARS or so. In fact, our name is actually etched in to the trophy. Yours never will be, so wind your f******* neck in.

Starting next season in a division higher than your illustrious neighbours, for the first time in over THIRTY YEARS, doesn't make you a bigger club.

It's 'you're', not 'your' in that context and 'bigger' is a SUBjective term, not an OBjective term so only used by those on the dodgiest ground.

And if I were you, I'd stop adding to Burnley fans' pleasure by revealing the pain you are feeling and hoping it is catching and they will get it. It isn't and they won't.

It shows up your lack of class and reveals an immaturity you show no signs of outgrowing.

The win at a dogged, but chaotic Blackpool was what was needed, and a Doncaster win or draw to imprint the confirmation. The former occurred, but the latter didn't. We now turn to Monday's game, and it is a toughie against an 'in form' Wigan side. They can't catch us, but they can help Derby to edge closer to us.

Derby has the easier run, but seeing as how Burnley need only to pick up 2 points from the 9 left, one ought to feel confident they will gain them.

Derby play Barnsley on Monday night, and Wigan come to us. By 10 o'clock Derby will have reached 81 points...I expect them to brush aside Barnsley easily. A draw with Wigan will keep me happy, but a loss will definitely give cause for concern.

Derby's last two matches are against Watford and Leeds, 13th and 16th places respectively. Each teams' season is over in practical respects, so how hard will they play against Derby?

Burnley's last two matches are against Ipswich and Reading, both teams fighting to get into the play offs, and that mentality may well impede Burnley if they are not careful. I'd like to see the Clarets beat Wigan, and get the promotion out of the way, otherwise I believe Burnley will be scrapping for it down to the last game.

Derby will reach 87points, and as I stated in a previous post back on the Barnsley game, Burnley need to finish on 89, or gain two draws and go up on goal difference...and even that is not out of reach of Derby.

I know that what I have written may come across as negative, but I just can't help feeling that promotion should have already been achieved. Burnley faltered at the wrong time, and are now not relying on their own efforts. They may yet be stung most cruelly. They have got to get out there and rampage the last three games.

That was a great performance and management by Dyche.
Over this season has shown that we can battle at both sides of the pitch. With or without our "big star charlie" a "big enough squad" he has instilled a winning mantra, a mentality. Not only to the team, but the fans as well...

When (not if) we go up the future of the club is bright and I think Dyche may just get a healthy transfer kitty to add to our current squad, which is already full of quality, yet small. And Im sure he will spend wisely and keep the same Mantra going.

Im sure the Prem wont be an easy task, however with the same mentality and a few more options I personally think Dyche can achieve miracles. Supported by the board and us the fans we can establish ourselves and shock a few more people along the way, next year...

Im jumping ahead. But financial fair play comes in to affect this year and we will be well set... This will affect the game once again... IMO...

Its great being a Burnley fan right now :)
