Waddington completed the ‘double’ as the inaugural Dorothy Southworth Indoor Bowling League came to a close.

With Waddington Red already crowned champions, it was left for Waddington Blue to secure second place with a resounding 6-0 win over nearest rivals Longridge Commodores.

The league, held at Roefield Leisure Centre, has involved nine teams and has been hailed a tremendous success.

Plans are already at an advanced stage to extend to 12 teams for next winter.

Read, who have without doubt been the team of the second half of the season, ended their campaign with a 6-0 maximum win over Clitheroe White to finish third while West Bradford continued their disappointing run with a 4-2 loss to Clitheroe Blue for whom Ray Black has proved an invaluable acquisition.

However the first ever season belonged to the two Waddington teams – Red and Blue – and their respective captains Bill Rome and Lynda Baldwin who have bowled consistently well all season and thoroughly deserve to take the top two places.

The league’s presentation morning will be held today at the Roefield Leisure Centre, Edisford Road, Clitheroe, where the mayor will attend to present the winners with their trophies while the Player of the Year winner will also be announced League organiser Eric Wallace has been delighted with the way the season has gone and is already looking towards next winter.

He said: “I have been completely overwhelmed by the success of this new venture which has attracted more than 100 participants in its first season, proving that if quality facilities and conditions are provided then people will participate. We are already planning to extend the league next winter to cater for the added interest and popularity and long may it continue.
