A TOURNAMENT for disabled footballers may have to be cancelled if organisers cannot find a sponsor.

Mill Hill Diversity Football Club have been asked to host the seven-a-side competition but are looking for funding to ensure it goes ahead.

The tournament is scheduled to be held at Witton Park in May and the club are hoping a local business comes forward to help cover the costs.

“We were asked by the Lancashire FA if we wanted to run the competition and we were delighted to say yes,” said John Walsh who runs Mill Hill Diversity.

“We were hoping to get some funding but there doesn’t appear to be any available.

“We really want to host this tournament and our idea is to make it an annual event but we need to try and get it up and running “But we cannot afford to run it at a loss and unless a local company comes forward to help us out then we may have to cancel it.”

The competition is looking to attract at least 16 teams from across the North West.

Mill Hill Diversity FC have enjoyed plenty of success since it was formed just two years ago, winning the Lancashire Ability Counts title which earned them the Lancashire Telegraph Grassroots Heroes team of the year award.

“We have had a wonderful couple of years, winning the LFA Ability Counts League and also the Grassroots Heroes Awards. The lads got invited to the Mayor’s parlour to show off their award.

“He said he will come to the tournament and hand out the trophies so we are really hoping it can go ahead.”

Entry fee is £25 per team or £20 for anyone who enters more than one team.
