Dan Clough column: Sixth spot is still there for the taking

MILLWALL manager Ian Holloway’s comments said it all after Saturday’s game.

“Truthfully, I thought the first one and the sending off was nowhere near as bad as some of the things I’ve seen recently.

“If it was a penalty then it is only a yellow card.”

Ollie is a bit like Marmite, you either love him or hate him, but at least he speaks the truth.

And not many managers would have agreed with Gary Bowyer about the nature of the penalties given to Millwall on Saturday.

Both were soft and for one to result in our captain being sent off was just outrageous.

Coupled with the two dropped points at Watford and it really is a case of what might have been.

Reading, somehow, are still sixth.

That sought-after last play-off spot really has been there for the taking as the Royals have won just two of their last eight matches.

But nobody, including Rovers, has stepped up and taken it from them.

Two points from six in games we could have won had decisions gone our way is not enough and we are still eight points behind.

How different things might have been.

Three consecutive home games await and we must win all three if we are to cling on to the faint hope that play-offs are still a possibility.

It remains very unlikely, but with everybody apparently desperate to stay in the Championship this season, you just never know.

The return of Tom Cairney will be a welcome boost as Bowyer has been limited in terms of creativity in the middle in recent weeks.

Dunny has been the only available midfielder with any real spark (and what a bit of trickery that was in the Watford box last week) but he is rarely on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

On paper, April is a month that could really prove decisive with plenty of games at Ewood and trips to some of the league’s strugglers.

But as Rovers have proved time and again this season, you can never take anything for granted.

It has been a season of inconsistency, so the chances of a fourth draw in succession are slim tonight.

I’m backing us to dent Brighton’s play-off hopes and keep our fading dream alive.

Come on you Blues.

I guess this is a cheeky April Fools article from Dan "the Comedian" Clough.

"Three consecutive home games await and we must win all three if we are to cling on to the faint hope that play-offs are still a possibility."

Only six years since you last managed to win 3 league games on the bounce Dan. But you keep pretending you have any chance of top six. Hilarious.

"On paper, April is a month that could really prove decisive with plenty of games at Ewood and trips to some of the league’s strugglers."

Really? Brighton, Ipswich and QPR? Haven't we heard all this before.. back in January, then February, then March.... and now it's April's turn to be the "decisive" month for Rovers. What a laugh.

Why don't you lot just accept that you're simply not good enough instead of embarrassing yourselves with ridiculous claims that you can claim a top six spot having been no higher than 8th in the Championship all season and where are you currently? ......... sorry I couldn't find you for a minute there.... ah there you are, way down there in 12th place.

Twelfth? Play-offs? April Fools!

And after the usual silly comments....It'll take a miracle Dan Clough to make the play offs now. We've had too many draws and we've been too inconsistent all season to expect promotion this year. There'll have to be a dramatic change of tactics and luck to make sixth spot now.
That said a strong end to the season will be encouraging as I'm optimistic that this squad can do much better next term.

and yet we are.... 27 points above you,

and we have .... beaten you at Ewood Park,

and we are also.... 9 points (effectively 10 points due to goal difference) clear of 3rd place.

You see the thing that you, and several of the other no-dad's fail to realise is that we can afford to lose EVERY SINGLE ONE of our 7 remaining games AND STILL GO UP AUTOMATICALLY!

Can you believe that?

I don't think we will though, I'm still thinking 85 points will be enough for us, a couple of wins will do it, and then your lot will seal it for us by beating QPR. What an ironic twist that would be, and you just know its going to happen don't you?

Meanwhile, down in mid-table, Blackburn Rovers are slip-sliding away.. now as low as 12th, and yet they still believe they are a top six side!

You couldn't make it up.

3 home games on the bounce, its time for less talking and more gettig it done on the pitch. We have no right to still have a outside chance of the playoffs with our inconsistent season, but a win tonight and we are back in the hunt.

in your dreams Dan....1 win in 7 games...you're having a laugh....Gary can't string a sentence together let along motivate his team to win a string of games....

lets hope we can pick three points up tonight....not that it will do any good in the way of a promotion push....but to give us fans that attend all home and some away games some hope and keep alive some hope that one day we may become a good team again....

Back in the hunt for a mediocre 10th place finish more like.

Dream on Walter Mitty.
