LAURA Massaro hailed Nick Matthew as her inspiration after winning the Women’s World Squash Championship last weekend.
On Saturday, she was able to return the favour.
The world number two from Chorley – the first British woman to hold the World and British Open titles at the same time – ended a hectic week of appearances and interviews by being guest of honour at the Canary Wharf Classic in London.
Matthew beat James Willstrop 11-5, 11-5, 11-5 in an all-English final of the international PSA Tour event at the East Wintergarden, London.
It capped a stellar week for English squash, the victory coming just six days after Massaro became the first Englishwoman for 15 years to become squash World Champion.
Matthew, ranked World number one, won his third World Championship in Manchester in November.
“I said to Laura she was going to inspire me this week,” said the 33-year-old. “I’m so proud of her and pleased to be able to win my final. James and I seemed to bring out the best of the London crowd. We play in tournaments all over the world but there is nothing quite like coming home” he added.
Massaro was on hand to watch the Canary Wharf Classic and celebrate a successful week for the sport.
