Ashton Under Lyne 6
Burnley 5
BURNLEY’S slim promotion hopes were ended in a blood and thunder contest at Ashton-Under-Lyne.
Burnley had to win to maintain any hopes of playing at the next level, and until the final minute of the contest, their season was alive and kicking.
There was no score in the first half, but Matt Crowley (right), Mike Bell and Cameron Crossdale impressed for a determined Burnley side.
However, it was Ashton who forged in front via a penalty, successfully kicked for the opening three points.
Burnley powered back into the contest through their only try, Nino Angleone going over to put the visitors in front.
But, with the clock ticking down, Ashton kicked a penalty in the final few seconds to deny Burnley the win.
Burnley have two fixtures left this season, against Trafford and TocH and they will be looking to finish as high up the table as possible.
