FORMER Scotland star and ex-Stonyhurst College student Joe Ansbro was the guest of honour at the 25th annual sevens tournament.

And Stonyhurst proved to be the perfect hosts as they defeated Giggleswick in the final.

Ansbro, who had to retire due to a neck injury, was back on his old stamping ground where more than 500 players competing for 40 teams took part in the long established rugby tournament.

He handed out trophies and prizes at the end of an excellent day of rugby.

The standard of play and skill demonstrated by all teams was extremely high across the four age groups of the tournament.

The Stonyhurst teams all competed with great determination and commitment and were a true credit to the college.

The U16s were runners-up having lost their tournament final against King’s Macclesfield.

Victory for Stonyhurst’s First XV further enhanced their reputation as one of the best young teams around as they have also won the Lancashire Cup, beat Merchant Taylor’s 36-0 in the final at St Helens.

The team’s efforts over the past 12 months have also seen them recently named team of the month by Rugby World magazine.
