We must improve, urges Blackburn Rovers boss Bowyer
BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer admits he and his players have been forced to take a long, hard look at themselves in the lead up to today’s trip to Huddersfield Town.
Bowyer held two meetings with his coaching staff after Wednesday’s woeful 1-0 home loss to Bournemouth before staging a separate briefing with his players.
And having cleared the air the 42-year-old expects Rovers to come out fighting and show an immediate improvement against the Terriers.
“After the game we all looked at ourselves and at the ways we can get better and improve,” said Bowyer.
“We’ve done a lot of good work and we can’t let it be undone by a few results.
“Everybody has got to step up and give that little bit more – that’s myself, the staff and the players.
“The chips are down and we have to come out fighting.
“We’re looking for people to roll up their sleeves and have a right good go.
“We are not going to duck anything.”
Bowyer has been encouraged by the response he has seen in training.
But he admits his team’s confidence will only be fully restored once they end their three-match losing run.
Bowyer said: “We’ve still got belief and confidence in the ability of the players.
“We went to Reading the other week and won 1-0 and, if you look at the results they’ve come out with since then, it shows that we’ve got a good group of players.
“But it’s now time for us to stand up and be counted and show it again.
“It’s only human nature that when you lose a few games it dents you. “The only way out of that is to keep working.
“But we know to get our confidence back we have to win a football match.”
Rovers now find nine points behind the play-off places.
But Bowyer is adamant the season remains very much alive.
He said: “We’ve got a tough game at Huddersfield and then we’ve got a tough game at home to Leicester before we play six games in two or three weeks.
“The picture changes so quickly in the Championship – you can be right back in there.”
