Paul Wheelock column: Cairney can be Rovers’ midfield talisman

TWITTER was a miserable place to be on Sunday night. But those who braved seeing Clarets fans celebrating a first derby win since 1979 may have come across a tweet from a player Rovers could have desperately done with at Ewood Park.

Matt Jansen tweeted: “Shane Dunny ran out of steam, it definitely helped Burnley when he went off.”

The former Rovers hero was spot-on as within eight minutes of David Dunn’s departure the course of the match – and history – had changed.

In the days after the defeat it is Gary Bowyer’s decision to replace Dunn in the 71st minute – and not Jordan Rhodes hitting the post when he really should have scored 16 minutes earlier – that many Rovers fans feel was the game’s real turning point.

They argue that Bowyer should have kept Dunn on the pitch given the fear he induces in Burnley’s players and supporters.

They have a point as it was clear that once their bogey-man was banished to the sidelines – with a well-deserved standing ovation – the Clarets were visibly lifted.

But you cannot blame Bowyer for wanting to protect a player who, when he starts, Rovers tend not to lose.

Statistics back this up.

Of the 19 league matches Dunn has started since the beginning of last season Rovers have won nine, drawn six and lost just four.

Those figures also prove that Rovers have to find a player capable of filling his boots.

As 12 of the 17 goals Rhodes had scored this season going into last night’s Bournemouth clash came when he started as a lone frontman.

So who in Bowyer’s squad can the place of the irrepressible Dunn?

Come in Tom Cairney, whose own importance to Rovers is underlined by the fact they have lost the three league games he has missed this season.

While he needs to develop Dunn’s eye for goal Cairney already has the vision and awareness to make him an effective No.10.

But firstly the former Hull man needs to get back fit and then it needs Bowyer to shift him from the right-sided position he has occupied for the majority of this season.

And with Corry Evans back at long last and a plethora of wide players now to choose from, the Rovers boss will soon have the luxury of doing just that.

Why not write an article about how crap we were last night?

We can't even get Cairney on the pitch so how on earth can he be our next "talisman"?

Blackburn Rovers last night;

Totally devoid of ideas
Totally devoid of passion for the club
Totally devoid professional pride
Totally devoid of managerial and coaching skills

All bar Conway that is.

Undefendable hump and hope "football" (LOL LOL) that would have Allardyce squirming in abject embarrassment had he been there.

We made Bournemouth look like Barcelona.

What a bloody mess.

Let's face it if GB had any real appreciation of quality and talent he would have worked with Rochina to iron out his failings. I still cannot believe he let him go on loan just like the equally inept Appleton did.
Cairney is good but not to the level of Rochina despite his often poor decision making. Rochina should and could be the new Dunny.
Also - anyone know what has happened to Josh King? Seriously, he seems to have disappeared? I have not heard anything about injuries? For quite a few matches this season he frightened defenders and was great. Inconsistent I agree but where the hell is he?
Oh yeah I forgot, he's not a League 1 English player is he.

David Dunn still has quality others dont have but like it or Lancs Telegraph - he has a limited shelf life as a player. Trouble is with him and Tugay I dont think supporters really appreciated what we had - certainly until now

Problem was never Dunny going off the problem was midfiled was conceded just like last night - when he came on Bournemouth had midfield control and Dunns influence was reduced because of it.

Bowyer says he wants a settled team yet this season he has used 35 players - dont think he knows what his best side is - he is become a tinkerman like Raneiri was at Chelsea - if you keeo shaking it up it might just come right. What was a worry last night was that again Rovers ran out of steam in the sceond half Rovers dont close the ball down they concede ground and got punished by a long range shot for it.

For the rest of the season Bowyer and his team are on trial - supporters are loyal but only if the commitment organisation and application are there

Agree

Bowyer and his fellow support staff have failed to sort midfield and RB position out all season so should rightly be held accountable especially considering he has had the licence to continue to bring players in

I am afraid to say that I would not trust him or his coaching staff with progressing us.

Short and Co must just go along with everything he says and does. There seems to be a theme here where Bowyer only likes players who are conformists or after a last pay day

Who honestly cares? We are talking Championship players here as Rovers, after the last three results, get set for a third successive season in the second tier for the first time in more than 20 years. It's a depressing thought and I hope the owners are happy with the way they have taken us from a decent Premier League club to mid-table Championship in such a short space of time.

Yeah exactly, lets pin all our hopes on one guy.
Why don't we have a squad full of Cairney's?
Why loan Ruben out when we have absolutely no attacking flair?

For me we need 3+ players who can play either through the middle or down the wing and are capable of creating chances and RUNNING WITH THE BALL.
Yeah exactly, lets pin all our hopes on one guy. Why don't we have a squad full of Cairney's? Why loan Ruben out when we have absolutely no attacking flair? Blackburn Rovers last night;

Totally devoid of ideas
Totally devoid of passion for the club
Totally devoid professional pride
Totally devoid of managerial and coaching skills

All bar Conway that is.

Undefendable hump and hope "football" (LOL LOL) that would have Allardyce squirming in abject embarrassment had he been there.

We made Bournemouth look like Barcelona.

What a bloody mess.
well Mr Nick been saying this all along 'feed peanuts - get monkeys' and thats just what the Venkeys Shaw and GB have been up to - all these post of steadying the ship etc etc etc is just rubbish theres a big a 'smoke screen' at Ewood trying to hide the shear devastation/mess that these clowns have manufactured between themselves leaving the club with no real back bone on which to build for the future as you say A BLOODY MESS

We're already above you, check the league table. We've been above you for the last TWO YEARS.

The Clarets beat you on your own patch. We waved you off before the final whistle and Ewood Park turned Claret and Blue. Even David Dunn couldn't save you!

We're 24 (TWENTY-FOUR) point above you.

Desperate no-dads clinging onto history because they have no future.

Embarrassed for you pal.

Lets put your 24 (TWENTY-FOUR) points into perspective. Burnley spent 6 (SIX) seasons 2 (TWO) whole DIVISIONS lower than Blackburn. That's before Jack Walker sent you lot into a gargantuan and unparalleled levels of bitterness anger hate envy and jealousy.

Like I said only another 34 years, a 7-0 aggregate pulverisation and a couple of major trophies and you've matched us - oh and you need to knock us out of the Cup aswell. Then and only then you've matched us.

And before you start desperately trawling the internet for stats that occurred way way before you hatched on some wheelie bin up Stoops, don't bother because I won't be reading any more of your monumental over reaction garbage until you come up with some decent banter material pal.

WE'VE JUST BEAT YOU AT EWOOD!

We're not overreacting. We beat you, we have proved once and for all we are the better team. In doing so we set ourselves up nicely for achieving automatic promotion, and at the same time consigned you clowns to another season playing in the Chumpionship.

Your history didn't save you from a beating by Bolton, Burnley or Bournemouth did it. That's 3 in a row, could Huddersfield make it 4, and leap above you? Anything is possible under Agent Bowyer.

Simple thing is you total tosser is that game has gone, it's in the history books and we actually have more important fish to fry right now.

So please go ask your mummy to change your messy nappy.

I think last night WAS Bowyers idea of going all out for a win. He started with four very attacking players in varney, Rhodes, gestede and Conway. Only trouble was there was nothing to back it up. We had Lowe who plays about 5 yards in front of the back four and never plays a forward ball, which left a great gaping hole in the middle of the park. Anything that dropped in the there was gift to Bournemouth and an open invitation to attack. I don't recall them ever having to work to win the ball back because they could just pluck loose balls from midfield time after time. Ditching Lowe for an attacking midfielder would constitute going all out. Harsh it may sound, but Jason Lowe is Blackburns answer to tom cleverley. Everything is sideways and backwards. I know he does his fair share of the dirty work but for me, that's not enough to warrant his place in the team. Tugay was a deep lying midfielder but look at the influence he had going forwards.

Oh don't be embarrassed on my part troll boy. I'd be embarrassed if I spent my ENTIRE life on here, creating account after account desperate to prove something (your posts are so dull with the same recycled dross over and over again I don't actually know what it is you're trying to prove)

Your jealous rant amounts to absolutely nothing because.....

Hold onto your dungaree's Mr Shadsworth 2014, the ride is far from over for you goons!
''We're not overreacting. We beat you, we have proved once and for all we are the better team''

Amazing, even by your barrel scraping standards.

I've not read the rest and to be honest I'd rather watch re-runs of Knightrider than read your tosh.

Now why don't you hop along and create some more accounts so you can spend the evening chatting with your self on here you train spotting odd ball.
I like knightrider.

The Burnley troll screams "WE BEAT YOU AT EWOOD" at every possible opportunity, I honestly don't think he believes it really happened and keeps waking up playing with his didgeridoo.

Simple thing is you total tosser is that game has gone, it's in the history books and we actually have more important fish to fry right now.

So please go ask your mummy to change your messy nappy.

U silly toothless mill hill gimp you come out with some carp.

So how many times did we hear you squealing 34 years whenever we put you down about our fantastic season and your very, very poor season? It was quite a lot wasn't it. "34 years Dingle, 34 years!"

You degenerate clingon's had nothing left other than your 34 year comfort blanket that protected you when the nasty Burnley fans laughed at you.. we couldn't possibly have any response to that could we?

.... except to BEAT YOU AT EWOOD!

You 34 year surrender monkeys have nothing left.

24 (TWENTY-FOUR) points
5 years.
Burnley going up!
Don't cry.
